Nokia E71 Fanatics Blogs: E71 & GPS Tip: Enable Assisted GPS To Get A Faster Lock

  • m · 1 year ago
    checked off or on?
  • j · 1 year ago
Verb 1. check off - put a check mark on or near or next to; "Please check each name on the list"; "tick off the items"; "mark off the units"
  • Indian Stallion · 1 year ago
I was confused by the "check off" statement as well. Clearer to just say "make sure Assisted GPS is checked."
  • Mike Macias · 1 year ago
hey guys! sorry for the confusion, I'm changing that text!
  • Rajesh · 1 year ago
Hi.... I am from India, under tool--->settings--> furthur I have no options as GENERAL.
there are only 4options under settings which are internet, navigation, route &map respectively. is something wrong with my pre installed GPS.
    Thanks if any reply....

I personally prefer to keep aGPS off as the data plans in most European contries are quite expensive .
  • Ukie · 1 year ago
install garmin mobile xt and upload unlocked map of north america or europe.... locks very fast and doest use any data
  • KernyKat · 1 year ago
I tried this, but whenever I launch Maps, the first thing it tells me is "No internet connection. Select 'Options' > 'Tools' > 'Go online' to go online."
I follow those steps and it just repeats the message...

The internet connection works fine in other apps, so i'm not sure why it doesn't in Maps.
  • adM · 1 year ago
never had that problem, i installed goggle maps and it takes about 5-20 seconds before it locates me on the gps.
  • Anthony · 1 year ago
    Same as KernyKat...

Don't know what gives...I rather Google Maps, but have heard such good things re: Nokia Maps...just wanted to try it...

    Any suggestions?

It may be of use to say I run Edge on TMO, and switch between Blackberry and E71, so it could very well have something to do with my "Unlimited Blackberry Data," plan from TMO...though Google Maps, and about everything else you can think of runs great...

Another note, can I replace Nokia Maps on Home Screen with Google's?

    Thanks,
    Anthony

For those of you who are having trouble with GPS and haven't tried this, this is what I did (I'm on TMO using Edge/GPRS):
    Menu-Tools-Settings-General-Positioning-Positioning Server:
Access point--(Select which you use for data)
Server address--supl.nokia.com (My e71 came preloaded with 'h-slp.mnc260.mcc310.pub.3gppnetwork.org')
  • Toby Field · 9 months ago
That's the same problem I had and changed to the settings you suggest. It works fine now.
  • veevo · 1 year ago
yes man my e71 also came with maps preloaded for my country [romania] but my question was where can i get garmin for free and use it without internet connection
  • ylemer · 1 year ago
@ SCheng : A-GPS didn't work for me since I change the preloaded address supl.nokia.com (wich was probably blocked by my french carrier SFR) into geoloc1.sfr.fr
Anyway, most of the a-GPS problem seem to have something to do with this server address

@KernyKat : did you check your access point in Menu-Tools-Settings-General-Positioning-Positioning Server: Access point
  • Tom · 1 year ago
The Access Points I can select are from my mobile carrier only. I also have WLAN access points, but they do not appear in the selection. Is there some way to have them shown in the dialog? The reason of course is cost.

Thanks for showing what to do about my GPS, but with a little confusion about on or off, but still its good, adding options to my phones are cool also stylish, actually there are some sites that offers applications and style additions to our mobiles to make it more prettier and useful.

Let's get something clear first. Nokia Maps and Google Maps uses the internet whether you use AGPS or not, you get network charges. If you use Garmin Mobile XT on your phone and assuming you are using the internal GPS, the AGPS only uses a norminal connection to the nearest cell tower to get a fix on your location and assist in pinpointing your location. So norminal network charges anyway.

When I got my Nokia E71, I got it without the A-GPS setting enabled. But luckily, I found this post; now I know how to enable it. Thanks!

Quick question... When I get online, Nokia Maps 2.0 always updates my map data. It deletes the existing data I just spend hours to download on my PC. Real bummer. How can I get my E71 and Nokia Maps to stop updating and retain the map locally? Thanks in advance...
  • KernyKat · 1 year ago
@ylemer - Yes, I did check Menu-Tools-Settings-General-Positioning-Positioning Server: Access point ... it is set to my data plan profile from my carrier. If I were to try changing the "access point", it actually doesn't offer any other selections... notably it doesn't come up with any of my WiFi access points I have defined. And that makes sense... WiFi generally would be useless when travelling far enough to need maps! I only have one access point profile defined that isn't WiFi, it's the only one selectable, and it's selected.

Even though it complains about "No internet connection.", sometimes it is able to find my location within around 30 sec. which seems too quick to not be using A-GPS...

I've taken to using Google Maps instead... which has it's own downsides but at least directions are free and it connects to the internet fine.

I gave 2 issues with the GPS such that I never use it much. One is I'm hesistant to turn on A-GPS when I'm roaming (most likely use of GPS) because I'm not sure how much my operator will charge me per kB. Two is the maps are not that comprehensive, i.e. there have been many times where I could find a road name on my Garmin but not on the E71.
  • Reactivator · 1 year ago
    This is BAD tip.
When I bought my E71 - I changed my Positioning Server - to my access point.
Oh my god, I had to wait ages for GPS lock on.
But now I put there an supl.nokia.com - it takes just 5 seconds with COLD start
  • Reactivator · 1 year ago
    BTW
When I bought my E71 - it was preloaded with 'h-slp.mnc260.mcc310.pub.3gppnetwork.org'

    JUST CHANGE it to supl.nokia.com
