Nokia E71 Fanatics Blogs: E71 Browser: Opera Mini 5 Adds Copy & Paste, Multiple Tabs, Plus A New Look

  • Tom · 3 months ago
This is very very nice, tabbed browsing is a nice surprise - good that they're trying it, but it doesn't seem to be implemented too well yet, on E71 at least - doesn't retain page contents very well - I've had Facebook Lite, Gmail html and say, wikipedia open, and it will dump two of the three out of memory. Seems kinda crippled...
  • androctonvs · 3 months ago
    Thanks for the heads up!
  • Martok · 3 months ago
I've tried it and it does look rather nice. However I've been unable to log into the full version of Facebook just as with the previous version - seems to circle between the log on page and asking for date of birth due to "logging on from an unfamiliar computer"
  • Peter · 3 months ago
Just giving this browser a go now, and first impressions are that it is pretty good! However, one problem that I've come across is that I can't use the "Ctrl/Chr" key to bring up the special characters menu such as brackets and speechmarks etc. Anyone got any ideas on this, or am I doing something wrong? Thanks in advance...
  • cayton · 3 months ago
Under settings/advanced, turn inline editing to off. A hassle, yes, but it works
  • dserodio · 3 months ago
I'm trying it and the UI is clearly oriented towards touchscreen phones, the buttons take too much space on the E71...

I guess I'll stick with Opera Mini 4.
  • Paolo · 3 months ago
The UI is an improvement from ver 4 but that's pretty subjective. It's not noticeably faster but the tabbed browsing looks swell.

I can't seem to log in to either facebook or twitter: it keeps telling me my username password combo is wrong eventhough I can successfully do so using the previous version of opera mini.
  • chaitat · 3 months ago
With the default inline editing, you have to press both shift key and the letter key at the same time to enter capital letter. Does your password contain any uppercase letters?
  • blusfumato · 3 months ago
more slow, a lot of bug.. it's a big early beta for me :(
  • formidible · 3 months ago
This is a huge improvement over the last version. Very quick access to your fav sites with choice of full or mobile views and full screen browsing. However does anyone know how to change an assigned site from the home screen? Also can't figure out cut and paste yet. Also cannot seem to import any bookmarks as you could with old version. Seems to be getting there however....
  • formidible · 3 months ago
Worked it all out now......really good browser. Will use all the time - at least until Firefox is released (whenever that will be, lol).
  • cayton · 3 months ago
I also could not figure out how to copy and paste.
  • cayton · 3 months ago
    Figured it out.

To copy, long press the Nav Button (the big one) while the cursor is over text. A menu will pop up allowing you to select text.

    Repeat the process to paste.
  • chaitat · 3 months ago
To copy or paste text, you hold down your main center button for a few seconds and it will show up the copy and paste dialog.
  • Rob · 3 months ago
Anyone know how to get the tabs up on the E71, I have no arrow keys! Also the character keys not working is a bit of a pain.
  • cayton · 3 months ago
Push the left soft key to bring up the menu, and push up to go above the address bar. You can't open a new tab unless you have at least one active page (not the start page).
  • formidible · 3 months ago
You can also select text and cut, copy and paste by simply pressing the number 1 (R) key.
  • formidible · 3 months ago
To open a new page as a tab you must navigate the mouse pointer to the top right + sign and click first.

how do i edit or delete one of the speed dial. I typed it in wrong.
also is there a way to set a default connection?
  • chrisada · 3 months ago
Press and hold the d-pad and you'll get an option to clear or edit the speed dial.
  • angeline · 1 month ago
gosh, i must have searched the whole web for this solution ! funny thing is, i pressed & held almost all buttons EXCEPT the d-pad !! thanks so much !!!
  • chrisada · 3 months ago
As has been pointed out elsewhere, copy/paste only works within the browser itself, which is a shame. 95% of the time I do copy/paste with other applications.

Does anybody know how can I import bookmarks from Opera Mini 4.2?
  • formidible · 3 months ago
You can't import them as such but you can login to Opera from the top left window on the home screen and then select bookmarks. Your saved Opera bookmarks should be in there. It's then a case of opening each one and then selecting bookmarks to save them in this version. Hopefully future updates will have an import/export option.
  • momos · 3 months ago
just what I was waiting for. Still have some bugs but has great potential. firefox will have theirs out in a few months. hopefully, google will also release a chrome mobile.

I think setting it to full screen mode is the way to go so you have full viewing pleasure. Then when you need to open another tab or navigate you just hit the left soft key and bam! it pops up. The right soft key appears to bring you right back to the start page which is nice. Where did the feeds link go though????? This was my favorite part of mini 4, it worked awesome, better than any other feed reader I've tried. Does anyone know if I'm missing it somewhere, cause this will keep me from switching. I also noticed with mini 4 you could press the left or right direction keys to go up and down page by page. I have been unable to do this in mini beta 5, you have to just scroll the distance. So for me, I think they certainly improved on some stuff but, at the same time they removed my favorite features. It's a thumbs down for me until they get the above implemented again.
  • skykid · 3 months ago
It has a gorgeous UI. And it seems quite fast . Thanks for the update
  • aborras · 3 months ago
One feature I love in 4.2 is the ability to jump from link to link using the d-pad. With beta 5 you have a cursor and it is slower and less usable. The cursor is useful for text selection but, can they keep the link-jumping feature?
  • djpenny · 3 months ago
I've got the same problem as Peter. The browser is very nice but I've got one problem with it: how to use "Ctrl/Chr" key for special characters? Is there any shortcut for that or something?
  • djpenny · 3 months ago
sorry I haven't noticed the reply from cayton :) it's working thanks

How do I disable the time in Opera 5, I could not find any settings that does this. I have timebox and opera time overlaps on it.

Also for new tab, * and up arrow opens a new tab.
  • Name · 3 months ago
Add Opera 5 to timebox app whitelist.

Is there any way to save images from websites using Opera mini 5?
  • pricen2 · 2 months ago
The only way to do it that I know of (without third party apps) would be to clickhold the d-pad with the cursor over the image and select Open Image. The image opens in a new window where you can select Open... to open it in the E71s media viewer and save it from there. A bit of a hastle to say the least.
  • quocsan · 3 months ago
After selecting text, choose "Search with...". Opera will open a text editor where you can do what you want.

i'm a new e71 user, how do you encode and underscore on operamini 5 beta. I have tried to open facebook and input my email with an underscore character but only a dash sign will appear after hitting function key and dash / and character and dash. your assistance please
  • blobbdobb · 3 months ago
x.facebook.com works well in Opera Mini, it's the best way to access your facebook now.
  • anton_eklipso · 3 months ago
i already use this browser, its more faster than standard E71 browser i like it, but unfortunately i cant using enter and i was unable to find under score or the others character in right down button.

    Hi all,

I cannot attach file in GMAIL from Mini Opera, if you have any idea, please send me your feedback.

    Thank you
  • Mike S · 2 months ago
As other commenters have pointed out, this beta version sucks. It crashes/locks, you can't get to Chr characters - and that's pretty poor.

    Beta versions should be usable.

    Hi,
I really like v.5, mostly because of the really needed tabbed browsing (well, and the cool UI).
However, I'm having a couple of problems I wanted to consult about:
    1. It seems that v.5 canceled v.4 shortcut for jumping to the end of the page (previously was done by #3 but now it's used for search). Is this option out? I really miss it.

Also, v.5 suggest inline editing of text fields, however - this method prevents from getting to special characters screen in E71. The only solution I found was changing the setting and cancel the inline editing all together. Whereas in v.4 I was able to enter a URL in the field or chose "insert symbol" if I want to add a richer text. Do you have any other suggestion?

    Thanks in advance :)

Opera Mobile 10 is out also. It's kind of the same thing, but for me its kind of faster than the OM5
  • jmacg · 1 month ago
I just installed Opera 10 but I can't activate it. When I scroll down to the bottom of the licensing agreement, the arrow won't quite go down low enough the click on the 'Accept' link. Any ideas?
  • Er Crini · 1 month ago
jmacg I really don't remember about having any troubles with the agreement. I think I can't help you whit that :(

Doesn't support change of languages, which is very useful for countries with Cyrillic alphabet. Also, Cyrillic searches do not work correctly. There are also bugs with connection. I can open most of the pages via standard Nokia browser much faster.

Has anyone tried the new Opera Mobile 10 for S60 3rd Edition?
Opera website says it is compatible with E71.

Yes! I have and it works great!
