Nokia E71 Fanatics Blogs: E71 Firmware Update Buzz - Anybody Here Updated Yet?

  • miroku · 1 year ago
I am using an Australian unbranded E71, and the update is not available yet. It is frustrating that only some product IDs have the update, and others don't. Makes no sense to withhold an update.
  • Ramnath · 1 year ago
Hi from India. Just updated the firmware and except for the Bluetooth connections, which seem more reliable; nothing else has changed. The camera continues the purple haze and still no Black Berry connect. Guess we will soon see another upgrade from Nokia, may be as the year turns!
  • illbirz · 1 year ago
NOPE....I live in california and I checked last week and there was no update for my E71-2. I also dropped it for the first time and the plastic part that the camera is embedded in is now chipped. :-(

HI EVERYBODY! i'm italian and i have an e71 no brand for italy but i didn't find any update for my nokia.. :( i went to one of the nokia point of my city this morning and i ask some information dealing with thre update.
a guy said to me: yes we have it (the update) but if you can't update with nsu maybe the update is not for your product code!
this is no possible: i tried to update with different product code!
i think that is not possible to update with nsu now.
    WE HAVE TO WAIT! :(

I have the new firmware, updated via phoenix a week ago.
All I can say is DONT UPDATE,because phone feels the same, the speed is the same, camera is the same, everything is the same.First firmware was already reasonable stable and fast,so no reason for update because you will lose your hack and install unsigned apps.
  • MM · 1 year ago
what is phoenix? seems like everyone with new firmware updated through that, whatever it is?
  • Phantom Lord · 1 year ago
Phoenix is program used for flashing nokia phones in service centers, cracked to work without nessesary flashing hardware,so you can flash your phone via data cable.Earlier it was very risky, but nowadays it almost safe as nsu.You need to download program and the firmware file.
Anyway I recommend waiting for the official release or not updating firmware at all. This is my warm recomendation unless you have problem with some bugs or you didn't hack your phone.
    Salute from Serbia :)
  • Phantom Lord · 1 year ago
Just to mention something,I've compared my updated phone side to side with my friends e71 (with older firmware) and there are no differences in terms of speed, functionality, camera quality,so I'm pretty confident that there are now major improvements, just few fixed bugs...
  • I-MEEN · 1 year ago
No update from morocco neither ! Just checked few hours ago!
  • rasika · 1 year ago
i updated through phoenix as well.

camera seems to have a tiny improvement. the contacts background is no longer white (theme background). VOIP seems a little buggy.

but the worst of'em all - 110.07.127 is UNHACKABLE.

you can update through nokia care suite as well (google is your friend)

In Sydney Australia - just got an SMS from 3 (carrier) notifying me of new nokia software update available from nokia website, but details to follow
  • sa71 · 1 year ago
Could anybody answer this question confidently before I decide to update (when it becomes available, of course).
I have Nokia E71-1(26), firmware version 100.07.76. This is apparently phone with code from Singapore and I live in Europe. This firmvare version does not allow direct screen search like the E71-1 European version, and I would love to have this feature.
My question is: If I change the product code to some European version and than update usin NSU, would I get the direct screen search on my phone; on the other hand, is there a chance here to screw up something like key mapping? I use only English on my phone.
This is important to know since everybody says that the new versions are unhuckable, and may not be return back.
    Thanks a lot
  • Phantom Lord · 1 year ago
Yes you can update your phone with european version.Mine is also e71-1 APAC and works just fine with european fw.Just make sure you have qwerty keyboard and choose for example uk code
  • sa71 · 1 year ago
Thanks for your reply Phantom Lord!

What do you mean by make sure you have qwerty, it is NOKIA E71. Which NOKIA E71 does not have qwerty. Other thing, what does APAC mean just to make sure I know what you are referring to.

    Thanks again
  • Peter · 1 year ago
The French and german versions have different keyboards. In France they normally have AZERTY instead of QWERTY.
  • Ramana · 1 year ago
How do you change to the European firmware? I have the Singapore version but I am looking for EU version now. NSU doesnt allow you to do that even if the Product code is changed. Any help here?

    Thanks

I've had it updated 27-10 at a company in Eindhoven, Netherlands.
But it's hard to tell if anything changed. The background issue mentioned above is a annoying one, but not a problem.
Gps is a little quicker it seems.
But hardly any difference with prior version. (110.07.127, dated 09-10-2008)

Melbourne, Australia - Got a messeage from my service provider to update a couple of days back. Need some advise on this. Do i need to backup all my existing files before i update?
  • sa71 · 1 year ago
Certainly, you need to backup your contacts and everything else you care for including your personal settings, using Nokia PC Suit in order to be able to restore those all of the above after you update your firmware.
The reason you have to do it, is because, after firmware update, you get the phone totally free from any personal files and personal setting are lost too..
Other note: Since you probably have not done something like this before, make sure you do not interrupt the update process even if it looks to you nothing is going on (like the phone froze). Just leave it alone until the phone restarts on its own (it may restart more than once). When you get something like"update complete" than you set the time etc... Use again Nokia PC Suite to restore your personal files and settings that you had backed up before you performed the firmware update.
    This will hopefully help you.

Got it (v.110.07.127) when phone was at repair shop (in sweden). Not available via NSU though. Haven't really noticed any difference except that phone can't be hacked to install unsigned applications... HelloCarbide, Drakkarious etc. does not work. Hoping for a solution soon. Here in Honolulu, Hawaii with my unlocked, "Model number: Nokia E71-2 (RM-357). Hereinafter referred to as Nokia E71" with firmware as originally shipped by shipper, no updates.

But something really cool happened yesterday. Martin (Menu -> Tools -> Speech -> Voice) said something crazy yesterday when I was on a date with my new girlfriend and she freaked out and said "who was that?" Oh poor Martin, he didn't know any better, he was just informing me that my account was getting low (pay-as-you-go contract which I used to start testing the E71 with before signing up to an AT&T 3G contract). I really like Martin but am having a hard time training him to sing like Brother Iz one of my favorite songs, "White Sandy Beach of Hawaii" < http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_YfyKahP-0 >

Are there any other voices besides Martin and Ellen that I can load onto my E71 and choose from?

Come on Martin, sing for me, sing!!

I saw you in my dreams
We were walking hand in hand
On a white, sandy beach of Hawaii
We were playing in the sun
We were having so much fun
on a white, sandy beach of Hawaii

    The sound of the ocean
    soothes my restless soul
    The sound of the ocean
    rocks me all night long

    Those hot long summer days
    Lying there in the sun
on a white, sandy beach of Hawaii

    The sound of the ocean
    soothes my restless soul
    The sound of the ocean
    rocks me all night long

    Last night in my dreams
    I saw your face again
We were there in the sun
on a white, sandy beach of Hawaii

    To sa71:
APAC means Asian-Pacific model (only differs in language pack or some programs)
and by qwerty keyboard I mean to look at your phone and see if it has qwerty or qwertz or maybe azerty layout (just look at order of letters on keyboard).
If you have qwerty layout (and you most likely do) just use uk code like I did.
    Salute from Serbia
  • SA71 · 1 year ago
    To Phantom Lord:
Thanks a lot. I did not know all those things. I just thought all the keyboards on mobile phones are made by the same standard. Yes, I do have qwerty keyboard and I fully get your point.

If you want to install new firmware update you must to make format of your phone.
Without that Nokia PC Suit will not detect new firmware for your phone.
Update is online few weeks now.
    Good luck !
  • Geddy · 1 year ago
You do not need to "make format" of your phone. You just need to check if there is an update available using PC suite.
By the way no update from here in Pitcairn Island.

    to everybody:
Sorry for the non english chating :)
  • sa71 · 1 year ago
Let's keep it in English so we do not have to apologize any more.
I wander if you are glad you updated your fw after all. You lost ability to install unsigned applications, as far as I know.
Do you still get white bacgrouind wen you open calendar or contacts while using other than Nokia themes?
Do you get direct screen search on Asian e71-s after changing product code to UK and installing the new firmware? Is the direct screen search advantage since you still have to push control key before performing the search in order to have only letters displayed?
Would you recommend updating to the ones who did not have other issues with their E71-s?
    Thanks?
  • sa71 · 1 year ago
I have to apologize to you Phantom Lord. I have just noticed that you addressed all of my questions a week ago.
I am a kind of mad at Nokia that they keep the most beautiful phone out there (E71) with such ugly themes, restricting other theme makers to fully implement their design on Nokia E71 by keeping original white background on contacts and calendar screens even when you install any other theme. With this new firmware they do not let you any more to install unsigned applications. That is bad, and I am not going to downgrade my phone by installing this new firmware

sa71,they've fixed phonebook, but not the calendar app, background is still white and I really dont understand it...I use dark nokia theme and it looks ugly.
About installing unsigned apps...almost every app can be signed with developer certificate, except irremote and my favorite menu editor.
They have fixed microfone bug which bug me the most :) All in all I expected more, for example menu transitions wich were already present in early beta firmwares, but I dont regret it because (as FCA0000 said) we dont know when or if the new firmwares will be hacked,so we can wait an year for hack, renouncing the good thing that new firmware bring us and end up with changing out phones eventually.
  • sa71 · 1 year ago
Here is the only theme I have ever found for E71 that has custom backgrounds for the calendar and contacts, the blue one on the top of the page:
    http://www.e71blog.com/2008/08/feature-flahorn-...
The rest of them still have white backgrounds. I hope you will like it, I do. However, it would be nice if someone can point out more themes that do not have background problems
  • Phantom Lord · 1 year ago
Not bad,but still not transparent like phonebook, just colored with blue.Speaking of themes here you can find beautiful themes with almost all icons changed, but calendar is still default though.

    Nokia Maps
I live in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and back in May this year when I bought my E51, and beginning of August, when I bought my E71, there was detailed maps for my home town Sarajevo just like for any major city in the world. However, soon after I noticed I could zoom in only to major communications in this area. I checked also Belgrade, no detailed maps, Podgorica-Capitol of Monte Negro, no detailed maps, Skopje-Macedonia, no detailed maps, Tirana-Albania, no detailed maps,..., while Sofia-Bulgaria has detailed maps, every small town in Croatia has detailed maps, and so on...

Now I wander what kind of policy, when it comes to detailed maps, Nokia has adopted: Do they provide only detailed maps for the countries belonging EU in Europe or maybe for the countries where there is Nokia service centers. Again, I believe that at least Belgrade must have Nokia service center even though I am not sure.
I will remind again, it is not question of data availability for the maps since my home town Sarajevo used to was among the cities with detailed Nokia maps (to the tiniest street level). I have downloaded European maps from Nokia site and stored them on my flash card and the same results I get whether I have internet connection or not on my phone when browsing the maps.

sa71,yeah I have noticed this too, nokia maps 1.0 had very good maps of major or medium cities, but now, belgrade is just few streets,it makes no sense.I tried to use older maps with this version of nokia maps but it doesnt work,so I switched to garmin
  • sa71 · 1 year ago
Phantom Lord, I am going to ask you something unrelated to maps even though I am replying to your maps comment.
Since, it seems to me, we both have the same phones (mine is Nokia E71-1 (26) , 100.07.76. 08-06-2008, RM-346), you might be able to help with this:
I noticed that my E71-1 qwerty keyboard is somewhat different from the European E71 qwerty keyboard:
Mine have open parenthesis "(" sign above letter o, and closed parenthesis ")"sign above letter p while European E-71 does not; mine have quotation marks " above letter l (el) and European does not.
If this is the case with your phone keyboard, did you loose the above inputs: (,) and " after you installed new firmware? It is a kind of convenient to be able to punch these characters directly rather than pulling special character menu.
P.S. If you want my direct email, it might be displayed if I type it like this: sa71(at)msn.com
  • simon · 1 year ago
phantomlord, also google maps lacks information in Belgrade. Perhaps Serbian government is slow in releasing accurate mapping information to the public?
  • Phantom Lord · 1 year ago
    sa71
hm my keyboard is kinda different,I do not have () anywhere on keyboard, mine is e71-3 i think, but now after update it says e71-1 (01) and perfectly matched with uk version,no wrong key mapping.Maybe you should wait for the official release of firmware for region of your phone, just to be sure all the key mapping remains the same.I'm sure once is released for the europe it shouldn't take long to be released for the rest of the codes...
    simon
No,its just lack of interest for smaller markets, goverment has nothing to with it.Anyway it doesnt matter because theres much better alternative like garmin, tomtom r igo for windows devices.

    Anything else you have noticed?
