Nokia E71 Fanatics Blogs: E71 Instant Messenger Apps: Battle Of The Big Three

Ebuddy rocks! Fring is the best for VoIP.
  • echoz · 4 months ago
slick by lonelycatgames is pretty good
  • El Marko · 4 months ago
I have to agree with echoz. Slick is pretty good. The apps profiled here are not bad, as Swiss army knives, but Slick does what it's supposed to and limits it only to IM.

And, for the last several weeks, Nimbuzz has continuously disconnected me, from Yahoo! Messenger, and has thrown up a cutsie error message, saying they've had to disconnect me (but not why) and promising they are "looking into it." Since Nimbuzz cannot connect to a major IM service - that's Step #1 - it's hard for me to endorse them, at all.

My favourite messenger for my e71 is Ebuddy.. :D
  • Joshua · 4 months ago
My absolute favorite is Slick (http://www.lonelycatgames.com/?app=slick). It does exactly what I want it to do (ICQ, MSN and GTalk), doesn't ship with unnecessary features such as VoIP integration, has a clean UI and is very lightweight and fast. After trying fring for a while, it was a joy to use this app.
  • corwin_amber · 4 months ago
I am using Nimbuzz because it does all I need (MSN, ICQ, Facebook (huge one), Skype)). I also like the way the company goes forward with updates and the UI.
  • Paula · 4 months ago
NIM BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ was not so good before if we talk about calling to person who is on PC and we chating from Phone.....but after few updates they fixed this problem and now Is just amazing! I love it....I can call PC-Phone Phone-PC and of course Phone-Phone amazing! and very fast! and clean conversation
  • mikolajl · 4 months ago
I use Palringo because it supports Gadu-gadu.
  • Vikx · 4 months ago

Nimbuzz wins my vote and I've tried all of the others. Second place belongs to fring. Slick is fine for messaging only but pales in comparison even in that to Nimbuzz. Palringo flops at the first hurdle.
  • azureflower · 4 months ago
i dont know what's the hype with nimbuzz. ive tried it this whole week and i must say im disappointed.

at first i was excited because it does let you access a lot of communities but then i realised at the middle of chatting i wouldnt get messages. i thought it was a one time thing but it happened on 4 days out of the 7days i've tried it.

i've also had the same problem as El marko, nimbuzz would disconnect me out of nowhere. i didnt even get error messages. =S

i'm going to try fring, palringo and slick next.
  • formidible · 4 months ago
Are you sure you installed the correct version of Nimbuzz? Never had any issues on my E71.
  • azureflower · 4 months ago
yep, im sure it's the correct version. i might give it a go again if i dont like the others listed here. im trying fring right now and i dont like the fact that i cant tell whether the contacts i have are from which community.
  • dani · 4 months ago
    Nimbuzz is pretty cool!
I usually used it for Sip and Skype Out calling.

I like it because i also use it on PC and iPod and all my friends are there(FB, Yahoo, MSN, ) no extra authentication.

    No problems so far.
  • Mike Macias · 4 months ago
Hey guys! Good to see so many people like Nimbuzz & Slick. I totally forgot to add Slick to this article. I'll update it probably this evening. About Nimbuzz problems, I've never had that happen so far but I'll keep an eye out. Thanks for the heads up.
  • Hawkmajor · 4 months ago
Actually, the problem could be related to just Yahoo only. They have changed the authentication system and requirements and will not allow the IM connection through, unless you login into the mail interface and give the extra information needed.
  • Richie · 4 months ago
I have not used nimbuzz since it virtually came out, since they have added all the additional features, I will give this another test run over the weekend.
  • saabfan · 4 months ago
I've only used Palringo and it's great. Does everything I need and even lets you send images and voice to users in Facebook chat.
  • Volcano · 4 months ago
Fring is my favorite IM applications for E71. The interface is clean, simple yet user friendly. You can login ICQ, MSN, Skype and others IM network at the same time and the contact from different networks all put into one list. So convenient and easy to stay connect with friends.
Plus you can also login to Facebook and Twitter. I highly recommended this application for E71 user.

    Just my 2 cents anyway...
  • djromero · 4 months ago
Fring's Facebook login has never worked!!!!

They just advertise it to get more ppl, but there's no way to get past the login.
  • formidible · 4 months ago
I agree about the Twitter add-on and the Last.fm add-on too but the UI needs heavily improving and fring are particularly slow in changing anything even though they apparently have lots of plans for improvements. Fring does not yet support status changes fully and seems to be confused as to which icons it will use in the main screen - the fring icon or the protocol icons? You cannot hide offline contacts which means your list of contacts goes on forever even though only three contacts can appear in the E71 screen at any one time (meaning scrolling takes on a whole new meaning)! That said the application is very stable now and you can at least continue chatting while exchanging files which Nimbuzz doesn't yet support. Nimbuzz still gets my vote though.
  • Andres · 4 months ago
    ABSOLUTLY NIMBUZZ!!
    never fail, support everithing.
  • Panatha · 4 months ago
I have e-buddy in E71 and i wouldnt change it for anything
  • Greg · 4 months ago
    Nimbuz for three reasons:

    * Nice UI
    * Voip over EDGE
    * US Company. Servers in US versus Europe.
  • middleda · 4 months ago
Nibuzz for me, Mike, as I was driven crazy by fring's autostart and UI. now that Nimbuzz has worked out its Facebook login issues, it sings!
  • Keri · 4 months ago
Big fan of Nimbuzz, particularly now that Facebook chat seems to work again. Fring seemed to me a big resource hog since my e71 would only run hot while this application was running even if only in the background. Other issues with Fring in my one month of using it: sketchy SkypeOut service, can't hide offline contacts, can't discriminate contacts according to service because they all have the same icon, options menu difficult to navigate.
  • cbrines · 4 months ago
Slick and Ebuddy are far and away better than any of the garbage in this blog post.
  • Mike Macias · 4 months ago
Slick is good, but isn't Ebuddy a java app?
  • michaelper22 · 4 months ago
I've breifly tried out Fring, but found that all the extra social network features get in the way of a neat instant messaging experience.

At home, my IM client of choice is Pidgin for Windows, and Palringo on my E71 very closely mirrors the Pidgin experience. Perhaps the most notable similarity is the ability to sign in to Facebook Chat, which connects me to several dozen more friends. You can chat with several friends at once, and sitch between them from a quick-to-access softkey menu. Also, like Pidgin, Palringo doesn't eem to degrade performance; I find that I can run several other apps and go back and forth with no noticeable lag.
  • Stewart Lochrie · 4 months ago
Michael, I've just binned Pidgin and replaced it with Nimbuzz on PC and replced Fring with Nimbuzz on E71. Works great so far.

    Regards,
    K

What I hate from Nimbuzz is ... the status of your buddy. In YM community, it only showed 'Online'. I don't know if this problem also appears in other communities.

I have problem logging in with Slick. Sometimes it just display 'Authenticating' or things like that. While on Nimbuzz, the log in process is just like a 'buzz'. Never had problem logging in with Nimbuzz. Slick also didn't support for conference (CMIIW).

Palringo ... sucks without the ability of showing emoticons at all !

Well ... that's just my silly opinion after all :)
  • JohnGabrikh · 4 months ago
Nimbuzz is not that impressive for VoIP calls, Nimbuzz & fring IM service is good but Vopium another VoIP service call tariff is cheap and voice quality is really good.
  • najeebkhan · 4 months ago
i havebeen using fring and nimbuzz since 6 months, both are good instant messangers, but login to fring is getting much delay compare to nimbuzz, and voip call /sip call option is much better in fring comparing to nimbuzz it has some audio server problem, sip call will connect but no sound at all. Nimbuzz has an option for taking & sending live photos while chatting, but fring has sending option only the files/photos which already saved in memmory. May be more.. features / differences you can find. - najeebkhany2k@ovi.com
  • najeebkhan · 4 months ago
Did any one know how to resend /forward the bluetooth messages may be it contents softwares/themes..etc from E71's message INBOX.
Presently it can send multimedia messages only.

Anyone knows the solution are requested to update & share the information in this valuable site with the permission of the WebAuthor. - najeebkhany2k@ovi.com
  • rottencoconut · 4 months ago
Mike, I think you need to add Slick & ebuddy (though it's Java) since there a lot of people use them.
I currently use Nimbuzz because it's the only one that can support Skype chat & Facebook chat in 1 app.
But, there's more to improve in Nimbuzz, such as:
    - Notifications of new message in E71's standby page (Slick has this) so that we don't have to open the app to know whether we receive a new message or not
    - Support of group chat without having to create a group first (just add the intended participants along the way)
    - Chat history (even Slick has this)
    - Video chat/video call (using front camera), just like PC version of Skype
  • rlieving · 4 months ago
Big 3? Nimbuzz is horrible. I don't know how you could leave out eBuddy.
  • Mike Macias · 4 months ago
Is eBuddy a java app or .sis file?
  • rlieving · 4 months ago
    eBuddy is a Java application.
  • aqeeliz · 4 months ago
I use slick, and rarely fring, but for skype only.
  • androctonvs · 4 months ago
    nimbuzz!
  • Gihan · 4 months ago
Fring is the best for me. Its easy to use. I only wish the voice call facility was better so i can skype wit my friends while on my bed.
Nimbuzz is ok but i feel its a bit bloated.
    Ebuddy does not have voice
  • IgorS · 4 months ago
I'm surprised noone mentioned Talkonaut (http://www.talkonaut.com). After struggling with Fring for a while, I switched to Talkonaut and I'm a happy user since. It supports ICQ, MSN, Jabber, and some other networks I don't use. I wish it had Skype support, but it doesn't. You don't need to register anywhere (use your gtalk account). It's got a clean nice interface that fits a lot of characters in chat space, and it has tons of settings to tweak it to your liking.
  • yslee · 4 months ago
    I just want to add:

None of them support MSN/WLM's new feature: Multiple Points of Presence.

Essentially once I login on the mobile phone my home computer's (on 24/7/365) WLM client gets logged off. I don't want that!
  • bbc913 · 4 months ago
i am currently using Palringo and it works perfectly well! it has everything i need. Plus the convenience of using voice chat. sending images from your files or a quick camera shot is a breeze.
  • verybad · 3 months ago
    Ok.

first of all, love this site almost as much as I love my E71.

Here is my setup regarding Facebook.

    So now I use:
*Nimbuzz for chat, works well with Facebook.
*ShoZu for posts and photos to Facebook.
*FlyScreen to quickly update my Facebook status and view others.
*emoze for getting Facebook inbox to my phone standard inbox.

Quite a mess for me actually.
Is there anyone thinking of merging all these or do i miss something
  • Mosh · 3 months ago
Perfect timing. I'm sick of the "official" MSN client as it will only work over 3G. I travel overseas a lot and although I can get wifi everywhere in SE Asia, I can't use MSN over it. I tried AgileMessenger (a beta version) which is incredibly unstable but the only free app I could find via Google.

Thanks for the article to to everyone for the replies. I'll try a few of them over the next couple of days.

iam currently using nimbuzz...its nice howeva iam unable to copy and paste links sent to me while chatting...how can i fix that?thanks
  • Brin · 3 months ago
I think it is Nimbuzz...i have tried skype voice calls and it is absolutely clear...The interface is easy to use...
  • kuki · 3 months ago
yesss, nimbuzz is better one, it's absolutly easier to use, faster and handy...
  • IncidentFlux · 3 months ago
The Nimbuzz mobile app, is really well designed.

Their desktop app is still buggy with dual sound cards, but you can use it where SIP is blocked, probably because the desktop client uses a SIP proxy.

However, the Nimbuzz mobile app doesn't bypass SIP blocking.

Haven't tried Nimbuzz and Palringo but I would definitely pick e-buddy over Fring for both my E71 and iPod Touch
