Nokia E71 Fanatics Blogs: E71 Tip: Ever Need To Call 1-800-WHATEVER? Here's How

  • BizarreBazaar · 1 year ago
I've been wondering, with the e71 does the phone have connection priorities? That is to say, a way to set it up such that if at home to use "this" wireless network, if at work to use "that" wireless network, and else to use 3G?

i think there is a software smartconnection, that does this. if you go downloads menu in your e71, you should have the software listed there. don't know if it is free??

Not from the box, but you can always buy Psiloc Connect - or download a free copy of SmartConnect from Meny, Downloads, Office.
Both will do what you are asking ;)

I just came across http://erik.thauvin.net/wiki/display/Tips/Nokia... (linked from symbian-guru.com) earlier today with a few shortcuts I hadn't known about.

Thanks so much for the tip on the 800 number dialing, that has stumped me a few times in the past and I had to look at another phone just to call a number.

How about typing letters *during* a phone call? I've had issues with voice mail directories ("please enter the last name of the person you're trying to reach") and have had to resort to counting out the letters in my head ("let me see - 2 is "ABC", 3 is "DEF" etc) which is getting old fast.

I have the same question re: typing letter *during* a call. Help!

Okay, I finally figured it out: during the call, press "Options", select "Send touch tones" (next to last item) from the menu, start typing in letters and then hit "OK."

    Kinda cumbersome, but it works.

    Rad tip, thanks.

One question I have about the first and second comment above. I have Psiloc and Smart connect, however many of the apps I use are third-party, such as gmail, opera mini, and twibble. These apps ask me everytime I open them (and a few times while I'm using them) if it's okay for them to use the connection, then to choose which one. It's all very well that I can just choose one default access point, but is there no wy to get these apps to use this by defaults?

    Pulling my hair out here.

Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving from Cape Town...!

I find it odd that I can make an Internet Connection through Wi-Fi and browse without issues if my SIM car is removed. Try to check your email though and it goes through an endless cycle of asking to confirm Wi-Fi security settings. I'e entered them and set up the Wi-Fi as a Connection type and this works for Internet but for email I can't connect and download. Does Mail have to go through your wireless provider?

This 1-800 dialling mode might work for regular telephone numbers, but not for certain operator services. Here's my problem: If I dial *FACTURA (= invoice in Romanian; translated in numbers: *3228872) on a "regular" phone and press green call button, my operator sends me an SMS with the latest invoice nr., date of issuance and amount I have to pay. I tried to use your workaround, but it didn't work; my E71 tried to dial, then displayed "requesting services" and in the end displayed: "There is no WLAN network available at the moment to make an internet call". Any idea on how to make this work?

I tried the method for dialing 1800FLOWERS.
I typed 1800. then pressed function once. pressed Shift key and F key.
    Nothing happened.
Is there any issue with 71x compared to 71 on this matter?? Any help???

    Thanks

Doesn't work on the E71x... my wife has the E71x and i have the E71-2... works on E71-2, not E71x... BUT... E71-2 freezes and reboots by itself (even during a voice call) about 10 times more often than E71x... all in all, if you don't want to fiddle with your phone a bunch, stick with the 'free' E71x...

Same issue for E71x, i think the directions above are for the unbranded e71
