I find the GMail application for GMail accounts is very good except that you cannot download or make attachments (yet).
still be found in the Gmail "archive". I love that feature.
It should have a way of moving them to the trash folder or archiving it.
or better yet, actually auto retrieve mail instead of standing by stupidly
Auto Expunge. Now when I delete mails in Nokia Messaging, it gets deleted from server also.
The other interesting thing is the email I got when I downloaded it. This reads: ‘For the next 30 days, this service is absolutely free. If you want to carry on using it once your 30-day trial is over, you can get unlimited* email on your Nokia for £5 a month or less (or you might be able to get it free if it's inclusive in your talk plan). Just get in touch and we'll set it up.’
From this I take it I will be charged, so it’s not free at all. On this basis I’ll be sticking with the basic client, which isn’t that much worse, it just looks very plain and doesn’t synch’ with online mail folders.
Gmail app is ineed good, Gmail in Opera Mini is nearly as good. Thank you for pointing that out, valid alternatives!
@Rob: It works a bit different, In settings you can set days when you'd like to remove or clear your inbox - writing 3 days means it'll get rid of everything before the last 3 days, from phone memory only, not server! (I use a weekly 7 days setting)
Usually when you delete, it removes email from phone and server. I suggest deleting unwanted emails on the phone (that you don't need on your Gmail server) and limit your days so you won't clog up to much memory on the phone! Hope that helps!
1. I was not able to receive an SMS message regarding upload.
2. When I download directly form the Nokia site, I still only have the original "built-in"Nokia mail app (w/o ,html support) -- which I don't like as much as the .html supported version.
It just seems like I'm stuck with the "built-in" version now. Again, downloading from the Nokia site (... and I've downloaded this client over 20 times) -- same result -- only the built-in client.
What's up????????
The only app I have found that it works for real and I have been using it is Mail for Exchange 2.7 (must be this specific version as the latest version contains a BIG bug). Composing emails is fast - no need to wait when sending, it just does it in the background. Reading email is super fast as it downloads all header and body already. You can also have Push Mail experience too. It can always be sync with your mailbox. The only requirement is that you need a Microsoft Exchange account which most of the time it does not come for free.
I doubt why some of you say the default email apps work on E71. They are all too slow when reading and sending and fetching new mails, unreliable auto retreival and etc
A lot of my friends use Nokia Messaging with GMAIL, too. They have the same problem...
If you don't have the problem, which settings do you have for your GMAIL-Mailbox in the Nokia Messaging Administration?
I called Nokia for support, the said that they know they have problems with GMAIL, but they don't know why (lol)!
Thank you for every answer...
Basti
- the default email messaging apps
- Mail for Exchange 2.7 (note that 2.9 which is the latest version won't work too when you use Always On mode which is similar to Push Mail)
I am not going to mention about other email messaging apps that are not working seamlessly as they will consume too much of power and ram.
Although the default mail app on E71 is easy to configure to access your IMAP or POP3 emails BUT after you has set it up, nothing will work as you expect. It won't always sync according to the settings you configure...
The only one that works is Mail for Exchange 2.7. It works seamlessly with nokia message. It syncs mail according to your settings. It can give you experience Push Mail when you switch to Always On mode. The only pitfall is that you need a Microsoft Exchange account. I pay for this service to mail2web.com.
Unfortunately, Nokia official site does not have a link to download Mail for Exchange 2.7 anymore. They leave us only the crappy MfE 2.9 which does not work! It has a HUGE bug that prevents me from using Push Mail.
You can get MfE 2.7 here:

Search for Mail for Exchange
I am sad with this but at least I find a workaround...
I use Gmail app, but it has lots of problems when comes to viewing attachments, html, etc. Is there any possibility of using Mail for Exchange with Gmail account without having to pay for something like "mail2web.com"?
Thanks anyway!

I have had no issues with 2.9 either, but I'd understand anyone who has an issue with any version of any software. Installations seem to vary between users greatly with this device ;)
I'd look forward to an article pitching '3 of the best' email readers (with OWA support ;) ). Cheers.
Why all email software developers think that only people with exchange servers want to receive meeting requests????
btw, where can i download your theme? i love it.
Also i think it isn't customer friendly of Nokia to not include MfE support in Nokia Messaging for E71 too (as it is done on E75, E72 etc).
@jonww74 That's what I love about the S60 platform, there isn't really one solution fits all, lots of alternatives out there with plus and minuses. By sharing your userhabits we can improve upon each others feedback!
@Dylan Valid point, I guess they had to add "more value" on the software side on new devices, a pity for us older E-series users.
@doinkers The theme is called "N86 (Solace) E by T7" I'm sure it's out there on the net for free. Glad you liked it, stay tuned for more!
like from 3 days to 1 month.
I also wondered about this till I found out by chance one day.

I've not tried Mail for Exchange yet, but if it works the same as Nokia Mail (which I think it does), set the access point as 'default' and it will use whichever connection is available.
Works likes this:
At home Gravity (Twitter client) is connected via Wi Fi. I turn on Nokia Mail, it picks this up and also connects via Wi Fi.
I leave the house and both Gravity and Nokia Mail drop the Wi Fi connection.
I open up Opera Mini and browse via 3G. Nokia Mail notices this reconnects via 3G.
To avoid the manual bit above, run an application which automatically changes the connection to the best one available and Nokia Mail will follow it (I haven't gone looking for one, but I'm sure there is one kicking around somewhere for the platform).
Sorry that's not Mail for Exchange specific, but hope it helps.
I am using Psiloc Connect and works pretty well.
I can get it 2 work with the normal e-mail client.
I think it's in the smtp server, in messaging i don't seem to be able to use a username and password . . . .
I tried unticking Intellisync and waited, the @ didn't return this time so tick the Intellisync box, I hope that box isn't already ticked, should solve things hopefully.
The problem I have is that with the Nokia programs it does not automaticly update mail mail-accounts.
and my phone is updated to the latest firmware...300.21.012 this is happening after i've updated the firmware... :-(
(it's no longer in-built in my Nokia E71, but i'd like to get it back).
Thanks for any info.
the reason i don't want to use the new nokia messaging is because it shows 3 lines of read emails on the homescreen which is really annoying and a waste of space.
i'm now using mail for exchange and SEVEN for my yahoo! mail instead.
cheers.
I've found the app very good except when I'm roaming. Even though all other applications on my E71 work fine (either over wireless or local telco carrier), the Nokia Messaging just hangs.
Here is the reply I got from Nokia support:
In regard to this issue, the software in Nokia phones is specific to the country of purchase. This is due to the variations in network protocols and data management that occur from country to country. As this is the case, while you will most likely be able to make and receive calls as well as text messages, you may find other features may have none or limited functionality.
When I challenged them on this poor answer, they suggested turning on roaming in the messaging settings - despite me telling them that I had already turned on roaming in those settings.
So, this nice app is totally useless when I go overseas and I have to check my emails through webmail / browser.
Anybody else have this problem? Any other fixes / workarounds?
I tried sending one 300kb attachment, but that went thru. Either its a bug or a restriction with number of attachments that can be sent!
STUPID NOKIA
I understand setting the outlook mail formay to plain text sorts this - great! Except i can't ask everyone who sends me an email to my phone to change their outlook settings to plain text can i!
Is there an answer to recieve emails with downloadable attachments??!!
what application is best on the E71 as i'm annoyed with it so far
Someone help me please, where Can I find attched files downloaded by nokia email app to my E71? There is a folder? Where r those pics that got on my email if I download it?
Because I´m affraid about virus and I suspect had got it on my precious.
Thanks.
If you press down on the D-Pad you can then tick or untick this option to make it go off-line when you exit.
Hope I've understood what you're after and this helps.
I recently installed Nokia email app which came with the new firmware update 300x. I can easily add my Yahoo, but cannot seem to add my main POP3 account which i use for work. Whilst I have this email working fine in the default messaging app that comes with Nokia (but very ugly), I cannot get it to work in the new Nokia email app. I keeps defaulting back into a new account on the old messaging app. Does the new Nokia email only work with common emails such as Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo and not on others?
