I recently bought Nokia E71 and try to use GPS. When I try to open the Map in the GPS folder, this message prompt "Cannot open application. Install the latest version from Nokia.com/maps" and then I update my maps from Nokia website but seems it doesn't work and still the same message appearing. I cannot use the GPS. What should I do.

I also had that problem. The memory card was somehow scrambled. Data was missing or messed up.
So I backed up everything (important), formatted the mem card via phone and put the backed up data back in there. (pictures and sounds).
Then I re-installed nokia maps and VOILA... werx! :)
Enjoying your blog and picking up some useful tips - keep up the good work. Just have a question though in relation to the recognition of chinese characters. Would you happen to know if software is pre-loaded or it has to be downloaded to be able to read chinese?

Also is there a quicker way to transfer all my data from my WM6 phone direct to the E71 without having to go the WM6 sync with PC, PC sync with E71 route. More importantly, i need to export my contacts to the E71

I'm looking for a way to configure IMAP on the E71 in such a way that it will only retrieve the header and the first 0.5 or 2 Kb of each e-mail. I tried several options but the E71 always downloads the whole message incl. attachments? I use the phone for roaming quite a lot and i'm afraid for the first bill for roaming data.
Does the Nokia Map app require and internet connection all the time? If so, why? I'm looking at getting one but want to use the map and AGPS without having to use up data charges, i.e. like you'd do with Google Maps. I believe the phone comes with the maps on-board so don't know why you'd need an internet connection - my TomTom doesn't.

I have two questions. I just upgraded to MFE 2.7
1. Out of office, can't find it anywhere. I had MFE 2.5.5 before and i was not there either, it may have been in MFE 2.5.3 or earlier based on some posts I have read. Have just powered up my Nokia E71, and inserted SIM... But I see no signal strength, and no details from the SIM, and can only dial Emergency Number, no SMS history.
The SIM is straight out of my Nokia N95 where it works fine..
Any suggestions about where to start the troubleshooting?

After a couple of weeks since I've been using it, my E71 becomes unbearably unresponsive and sluggish. After a couple of calls, a couple of unanswered ones, and two or three received sms's, it will almost grind to a halt. It does not matter which apps are or are not active, but any action (going into a menu, going into the texting app, etc.) will easily take 30 seconds or more. The red-phone/cancel button works, and the button on top (profiles) are always OK, and calls coming in are handled well. Then, after a while, the phone goes back to normal behaviour. Or not. Usually, I just switch it off and on. That helps for a while until the problem appears again. I have not installed weird apps, just a few themes, but it also happens with the pre-installed themes... It's terrible, I don't know what to do. Please help?
I have a Nokia E71, i used to have window live messenger installed on my phone but lately my memory card crash on me and the installation file had to be formatted. Is there any way i could download the software again?

I'm currently an iPhone user and I'm seriously concidering an E71 for calls and messaging along with my iPhone for browsing and general multimedia stuff.
But I have a couple of questions about tethering:
-Is it possible to use the E71 for tethering to my current 1st gen iPhone/iPod Touch(Shouldn't be any different from doing it to a laptop, right?)
-Is it stable and easy to use?
-Is it fast?
- Very stable, although if you're new to S60 it's gonna take some getting
used to. Tons of settings to dig through.
- Extremely fast, without the transition effects of the iphone.
Do you know about the BlackBerry Chat in e71? I can´t use it.
When receiving text or mms messages, my E71 is not showing who it's from even when they are included as contacts in my address book. All i get is the number from, but it's not showing me the contact.
What needs enabling..?

Just upgrade from e51 to e71 but have one problem with text messaging.
I cannot seem to set the default entry for the To field in E71 to numeric. Currently I have to tap the Function key twice to set it for numeric input in To field. After that when I move to the text section, I have to tap Function key again in order to enter text. Can I set the To section to default numeric and Text section to default text ? Please advise. thanks
This is a great blog and thanks for posting those themes since the original ones on the E71 are ugly. Anyway I was wondering if you have any information about full body protection kits for the E71. I have a full body kit from Invisible Shield/Zagg for my Nokia N82 Black and its really great. However the people @ Zagg told me when i called them that they consider the E71 a "hot" device but they need someone to send them a handset to create the prototype shield and all that. Have you had any experience with sending your devices for alteration and the state in which they return? Also i cannot install mobitubia on the E71. It says certificate expired.

As for your certificate error, set your clock back to a year ago, try to
install it, then set it back that should work just fine. Let me know if you

Do you have any applications installed on your Memory Card? This may be the reason. It's yet another reason to install stuff on the Phone Memory. You should be able to use your phone like normal when in PC Suite mode.

I, well, set up an email account vie yahoo on my new e71. However, I find it easier to get on the web to access mails. How can I remove yahoo as the default mail client?
I do not like how the e71 displays IMAP folders, even after I tell it the Unix prefix is [Gmail] it continues to display it. And I don't think it's possible to move messages between folders (important for Gmail to move messages from Inbox to Spam). And I have not gotten a stable connection, even the 30 mins = IMAP IDLE trick does not work for me. And I hate that it downloads headers only - this alone makes it unusable for me. Also hate that I don't see the subject lines on the home screen without fiddling and hovering. I do like attachment handling.
If the new Nokia mail beta supported subscriptions to additional folders such as Spam and Starred (and if their Sent folder worked) it would be a good solution. Attachment handling is still iffy. And flags/stars do not pass between the phone and Gmail. I do like that it displays subject lines on the home screen.
Profimail does not appear to be integrated into the e71 - can I even map it to the email key? Can I get it to start automatically? Sad to say but if I can address these issues, the current beta would be the best solution for me - it can even pass flags/starred mail between the e71 and Gmail.
I got two queries:
1- Whenever I start my Nokia, it displays ''Installing". What this supposed to do?
2- We had separate tab in Contacts for Contact groups in old E series. How I can see my contact group and members in E71
To see your contact groups there is a drop down tab in the contacts app. Right now it probably says "contacts". if you select it the dropdown should show "groups".
Let me know if you get it to work.

Does anybody know how to delete a broken mailbox folder from the messaging sections? I've installed Emoze and removed it because it didn't interest me. The problem comes after a hard reset when I restore my messages backup, the emoze folder shows up with a broken question mark sign. When I open it I can see 4-5 emails which I'm unable to delete. I'm also unable to delete the emoze folder.
Does anybody know how to do this?

I have the latest firmware. I was using System Seven and upon upgrading itself the install got corrupted. I was able to remove system seven but not the mailboxes.
This will involve changing your product code which I don't know how to do.

This to ask - Most of the time, I don't want alerts reminding me of meetings. On my e61, by default, the alert was off, and in the cases I felt it is needed, I turned it on. On my new e71, by defualt the alert is on, and I have to cancel it every time I add a meeting. Is there a way to change this? I think in my e61 I could define the default, but I can't seem to find how to do this with the e71.
One question though regarding the E71 (and I guess Symbian functionality). The E71 comes with a host of pre-installed applications and menu items (RealPlayer, Podcasting, help folders, etc..) some of which I would like to get rid of. My problem is, that I can't seem to find the way to do this... I have already tried the Application Mgr. program as well as selecting options for the app (which tells me that the app can not be deleted)... Do you know of a way to do this?

To do this just hit "options" it is the left softkey when browsing a menu. There you can move apps around and rename folders, etc.
whenever i set an image as wallpaper it always cut soff the top and bottom of the image so that i am able to see the "menu" and "camera" options at hte bottom, and the service and date at the top
im fine with being able to see those settings, however its annoying how it cuts off the image without the option to select what part of the image id like to have, (such as moving the whole image down and stuff) is there a way to fix this?

To switch off the Breathing Light, go to Tools | Profiles | General (or the profile of your choice) | Personalise | Breathing Light | Off/On. This seems to toggle between the breathing light and the screen saver.

1. How can I set the E71 so that the podcast application launches in the background every time I turn it on? As of now I have to launch it every time, which is a big pain.
2. The podcast application does not seem always to download new podcasts. It lists them in the list of podcasts but I have to click on them to download. I always always always want them to download automatically -- I don't subscribe to that many, I'm using my WLAN so data charges are not an issue, and so I've got it set to ignore the data limits on my 8GB card. So there really shouldn't be an issue with automatic downloads, but they aren't always happening. Do you have any advice about how to make automatic downloads truly automatic?

1. You need to find an application called Jbak Taskman. That is a great taskmanager but requires some learning as there is alot to it. You can also try this app...

Feature Pack 2 is the key. The E71 has feature pack 1. There is a 3rd party application called Psiloc Connect I believe that gives you this functionality, but I haven't yet tried this out. I'll give it a shot later this week and let you guys know how it works. It's a $$$ app. If you try it come back and let us know if you like it in this thread.

I've tried retrieving email a couple of times and the prompts i get are "packet data connection not available" or its says that i have to check incoming email settings.

On my Windows Mobile device (Palm Treo 750) I was able to specify multiple folders within my Outlook to sync (I had sub folders within my Inbox). Is there a way to sync those folders with the E71? It kind of sucks to only have some of my emails synced to my phone..

Second - I want to stop crying... I bought an E61i in June (yes, I knew about the E71 coming out then), and was generally happy with the phone EXCEPT for one problem....
SMS messages could be received, but I could not reply to them.
I thought that this could be because my E61i was manufactured in Finland, and when Googling the issue, I found many other people with the same complaint.
I bought my phone (E71-2) from NewEgg brand new and got it yesterday. I was so excited that I didn't pay attention to checking anything under the cover, as I wanted to start playing around with it.
SOOOOO.... my problem is... THE SAME!
What's going on? I have seen other places that smartphones have problems with SMS messaging, and I have been able to succesfully respond to received SMS mgs by replying via MMS, but not only does it cost money for some people to recieve, it also cannot be recieved at all by my friends with iPhones...
HELP!?!?!?

with the settings on your E71 and your T-Mobile carrier.
You might have to call T-mobile to get these settings. Go under Messaging >
Options > Settings > Text Message. Look under Message Center. I'm not sure
what those should be since I'm on AT&T. Also check out Preferred Connection.
Mine is set to GSM/UMTS.
The location the phone was made shouldn't affect anything with SMS. All
Nokia phones can do SMS messages, and they are handled the same way. Good

The deal is, I already have gone through this on the phone with T-Mobile, who claim that it's because I don't have a T-mobile branded phone (which we all know is a lie because I have been with them since 2001 and have had 3 unbranded phones in a row).
I also know the message center number, which is +12063130004 (must have the plus! - been through this with customer 'support' as well) and as seen on forums with other people with the same issues.
Then, that left Nokia, who told me that it was because my E61i was made in Finland!
It seems as if no one has an answer - anywhere.....
Mine is set to GSM/UMTS as well...
Just don't get it. Can get texts, and mms, and can reply by mms, but not by text.
Am I going to have to sell both of these and go back to my dino 6230? I have been a LOYAL Nokia fan since I first got a cell phone. Never owned another brand (tried, but immediately came back within 1 day).

I did this experiment yesterday, and YES - IT DID WORK with AT&T!
My friend made a suggestion to me - which, immediately, made me feel like a complete asshole: Go to T-Mobile and get a new SIM card.
Have no idea why I never thought of that, but - I have had only Nokia's and only T-Mobile, and SMS always worked until the 2 E-Series phones...

Three questions for ya:
I have read where the E71 camera has a "purplish hue" when taking photos. A few days ago I noticed what looks a tiny purple-red piece of fiber on the inside where the lens is. At first I thought it was outside -- but it is definitely inside where the lens.
1.Could this cause the problem?
2. Also, is there a way I can get inside and remove this fiber -- without messing up anything?
I love this phone, really -- but it seems that the QA may not have been quite up to snuff.
3. Is there a way we can contact/complain to Nokia directly?
By the way, do you know the file name of which stores sms, text messages on the memory card?

They are probably lost, and to prevent this from happening again go into your message settings and choose to save them to your phone memory. It won't affect your RAM as some think it will.
application called "Slick IM". It uses all data which I like. Works
perfectly with the E71.
there is just one thing i do not really like about the E71. And its the header or whatever you call it that tells you what application your in. For example "Personalization" or "text messages". I do not like how the last letters fade out. When i first saw it i thought something was wrong with the screen. But then i looked at video reviews from BGR and Mobileburn and their screens had the same format. I think the trailing dots would have been much better as on the N82. Or maybe all E series device use the fading format?

Your best bet is to find a theme that has the colors you need and then go into the theme settings and change your wallpaper. Everything else in the theme will stay the same.

it sometimes work on browsers when entering search boxes but other than that i find no other use for the enter/return key.
i was hoping it will co-exist with the center d-pad in "entering" your choice highlighted. Less wear on the center pad.

How do you change the email font size on the e71?
I tried that. It has no effect on the email text. I'm trying to make the email text smaller. My display setting is set to 'small'. Even when it was 'large' the email text was the same font and size. Any ideas?
Lately I've been having a strange problem...although I've set my idle imap connection to "push" gmail to my E71 on the default email client which comes with the phone, every now and again I find that the automatic retrieval feature has gone back to "disabled"...I notice this because I don't get email for a while and I see that the data connection is interrupted although network coverage is at full bars. I understand that if the connection get interrupted, then the "sync" process will be offline for 30 minutes (or however long one has specified in the automatic retrieval settings) but my problem is that the actual automatic retrieval has been somehow shut off....anybody else with this problem? or a solution? :)

Once this happens, the Email Application disables automatic retreival for some odd reason. I know this a pain in the ass but this is what happens.
For these reasons I recomment to use the Seven application for your Gmail needs.
Push mail is one of the major components and it's simply not working properly.
or is there one at all.
Once I delete them form the inbox are they totally gone?

What language are you looking for?
Being bit of a structures fascist I called Nokia's customer support to learn more about the folder structure in the E71 (as seen in the std. file manager or applications such as X-plore). There seems to be no documentation of 1) what the purpose of the folders is, 2) why the same folders exist on both the phone memory and the memory stick.
Nokia support basically told me, that this was something they could not tell me, and recommended me to not play around with the folders, as it could damage how applications function.
My problem with this answer obviously is, that the pre-installed folder structure is very application centric (notes documents in notes folder, etc.). However, my logic would be to organize files according to purpose (business, private, task, etc.)
My question therefore is....
1) Has anyone in here tried to understand the logic behind the std. E71 folderstructure? And
2) Is there a better way to organize the folders?

2) err.. quite probably, yes.. but don't do that. some apps are smart enough to find appropriate data wherever you put it e.g. music player (yeah.. when you tell it to scan), gallery. but most of the others, including built-in ones, really aren't. you could make a sacred folder \YourStuff under which you have complete control of the structure, if it makes you feel better :-)
I wouldn't look too deep into it. As long as your phone is working properly.

Man I must say... you are great! Judging by the logs, some could believe you don`t sleep. Well, my question is related mostly on email basis. I have my old E61 and now i have a brand new E71. On mu old phone i had 2 mail accounts: 1 from Gmail and another 1 from blackberry.orange (i have the carrier`s Blackberry Service on). On the second one i forwarded all the mails from work. Something must be told here: our company mail server is built on Linux OS so it cannot use the Exchange version. As for the Gmail the problem is pretty much solved, what do you think the solution for the second part would be?

It is a tragedy that nokia isn't including bb connect.
Can you tell me if there is a facebook application for the E71? instead of using the mobile web link for facebook. The Iphone has a very good facebook application and would love it if there is one for the E71

I have a problem with SMS notification bubble ie. it never appears. If I have it turned on in the settings I only get the envelope icon in the top right corner and if it's turned off then I get the "1 New message" big box on the screen. All other (missed calls, voice mail) bubbles work fine.

Having an annoying issue - when using exchange email and I click the mail shortcut - it drops me into the middle of my emails, sometimes from days earlier. I have to scroll up every time to see new messages. Is there a way to fix this or jump to the most recent email?

i mainly use my n82 with sports tracker when i workout but last week the battery died and i decided to try out E71. It worked great but now i have one part of my workout on one device and the rest on another. I know that one solution to this might be to to upload the data from both phones to the sports tracker website but that method does not really appeal to me. Viewing the results on my phone is fine by me. Is there anyway to sync the information from both phones with out a computer? As far as i can tell there is no bluetooth option to transfer data for sports tracker.

Not really sure about sports tracker though, but if 2 phones have the same standard apps it should be ok.
2. Then insert battery without the memory card, turn it on.. If it works then the memory card is the problem.
3. If your phone is started but still hangs. then you should format to the factory default. (on home screen type : *#7370#) it will ERASE everything in the internal memory, so your data will be LOST. take caution.
Now all i get is "unsupported type"
i like how it renders stuff as if it was for the desktop/computer. i dont like when things are re-rendered for the cell phone
I am trying to import my sms from other phone which I have in the format of : CSV or XLS into the E71, Nokia pc suite doesn't have the import function.. Is there a program to do so?

3) I doubt the email would support Rich Text format, but could you possibly give me some good news on that?

1. I cannot enter underscore in my Skype App on the E71. The Symbol button shows only three options for the username. In other places it shows all the 2 pages with the underscore.
2. I have problems with my SIP and VOIP options. Especially, it looks like the WLAN is playing up.

Noticed that after using Pizero theme for a while, the commands at bottom left and right of the Home screen tend to be overlaid with other commands so that it becomes gibberish whenever I switched to other screens......it becomes OK after reverting to Home screen.

Mine displays message "Not supported". I recall that in the E61, even when the phone didn't recognise the format, it allows one to save the link to the clip. No such option in the E71 though.

The E71 can download .wmv files but dunno where the heck it saved it to...used Y-Browser to trawl but can't find it. is it because it's invisible to the phone if it doesn't understand the format?

1. How do I terminate active 3g connection? Anytime I try it restarts immediately.
When I try to clear the data packet log, it tells me it can't do it during an active connection. When I terminate the 3g connection, it immediately restarts, which means there is no way I can erase the log. Obviously there is something constantly running at the background, but I can't figure out what it is and more importantly, how to stop it. Possible culprits are: Nokia email, Weather check, SIP registration process for VOIP (using Nokia Internet Call feature and it works for me).
2. How do I make a permanent Bluetooth connection? I linked my e71 to my laptop but anytime it connects it asks for a permission on the mobile ("Allow connection from xxx?") I tried deleting the existing connection (R71) and reastablishing with renamed e71 (R712) but Nokia PC Suite seems to remember the original name (R71) and keeps reconnecting under it (eventhough it should not exist). I am puzzled.

Just want to share with you a tip that I discovered. You can have the list of active applications by holding down the home key anywhere. This is a pretty neat feature that I use to jump around apps and its just like the one from the Palm OS.
Now I want to ask for your help again, I know some E71 version can search the contact list from the home screen by just typing the first few letters of the name. A drop down list will then show you the result of the search. However, the version that I have (RM-346 APAC-Q HK GREY STEEL) does not seem to support it. Is it possible to turn on contact search from the home screen in my version of the E71? Thanks.

2) Can N95 8gb themes work with the E71?
3) Why can't videos captured by N95 8gb work with the e71 -- they both support mp4 formats right? i found a way around it by converting the video to a 3GP format but i am just wondering why there's this "incompatibility" with the video.

I need a little help with my e71.I been using my e71 to see videos on youtube and metacafe over past few month, but now the moment i click on watch video buttom, real player comes up, it shows connecting on the screen and then "unable to connect".This happens with youtube,vtap and metacafe.

I'm enjoying my E71, and managed to customize most of what I wanted, but one item still escapes me:
When I have missed call, I get a text message in my sms inbox stating the call was missed, along with the number of the caller. I did not get this sms notification on my old phone (sony ericsson p1i) so I must assume this sms notification is a feature of the e71. How to turn it off?

yesterday i went to chicago (about 50 miles away) and i decided to try out the turn by turn navigation using Nokia Maps on my E71 NAM. For comparision i also took along a Garmin navigation unit as well. Long story short the Garmin unit out performed Nokia Maps by leaps and bounds. The main problem with Nokia Maps was that it recalculated route too frequently. For example if the vehicle is at an intersection waiting for the light to change and it had previously told you to go straight for 9 miles (abritrary figure) before you got to that intersection it recalculates the route and it may tell you to turn left or right instead of going straight ahead as previously commanded. I think the problem is gps sensitivity. Meanwhile the Garmin displayed no such indecisiveness. And i thought that the E71 was going to come out on top because its using all this agps b.s. but i guess not. Maybe the N82 would have performed better. Oh well next time.
p.s. Almost forgot. The Garmin did not utilize an external antenna.

ok like some people...my mmc got corrupted and i lost everything inside including the pre installed apps and maps. I know I cant retrive them but how can I reinstall them...where can I get them files and apps.
2nd part...lets say someone uploads it somewhere on the internet. And I downloatd the whole thing. I imagine that it would be in RAR format. How would install it again in the mmc. ( i'd need a step by step guide on this plss)

This should result in a JAR file. To install them again you can use the Nokia PC Suite. Connect your phone to your PC, open the PC Suite and than drag & drop the file to the PC Suite (over the image of your phone).
It is than copying the file to your phone for the installation procedure. So the installation itself continues on your phone. The phone is asking you if you want to install it into the phone memory or on the memory card.
That's it.
I need some assistance accessing my contacts with the One-touch key or menu / communic / contacts. If i press the one-touch key or the contacts folder, the screen will briefly display a blank screen and blink, then return to the previous screen. Can only access my contacts by typing a name on the main screen or Nokia PC Suite.

I was wondering if anyone had a solution to my problem. I have added album art to my mp3's through the E71's music player because I have trouble getting the itunes album art to show on the phone.
This requires a local jpg on the phone which is acceptable. But I don't want gallery to see it. Looking on google there are solutions for the N series but they don't seem to work on the E71.

I take notes at meetings on my e71 and it kinda syncs with the Outlook calendar item (shows when I hover over the item in the Outlook calendar) but when I open up the item in Outlook the notes aren't there! So I can read them, but I can't edit, copy or paste etc.
Also having problems with the Notes.
I'm using Outlook 2003 if that matters.
I'm guessing maybe a virus? If so how do I locate and get rid of it and then reinstall everything?
My SO says it's might be a sync problem when I tried to set up mail for exchange (not having a clue what I'm doing).
Any other ideas? I love my new phone and really want to get it working properly again (indeed it was ravaging SO's iphone until this problem).

Is there anyway to remove an email box from the phone without reseting the device? also my notebook has integrated bluetooth and sometimes i use my stereo bluetooth headphones with the E71 or N82 and everytime my pc starts trying to connect to my phone. before i had just the N82 and the Nseries PCSuite installed and i never had this problem. but i installed Nokia PCSuite that came with the E71 and i have been having this problem ever since. Go to the message application. On the main screen (where you see inbox, sent, outbox, ...) click options -> settings -> other -> Scroll down to memory in use -> select your memory card

Sync folders is not support by Mail for Exchange. You cannot change this. There is no other software for it.
wrt to moving mails to memory card..
i just did that, and all my messages and emails that were previously on the phone memory are all gone. my email settings are also gone. please bear that in mind (or at least save them first) when you shifting memory status to memory card

In my engineering college i have a open public wifi network in Static ip mode which dosnt generate ip addresses in case of DHCP enabled we have to enter IP address subnet mask default gateway and DNS settings is all this available in E71
How to do all this settings or its just public DHCP enabled and SSID private network connection possible in E71
I have the same settings at home public network but dynamic IP generation disabled
which is the most preferred setting should i use the SSID private connection

does anyone know if the E71 or nokia products with wifi are able to use the 5. something gigahertz spectrum that some wireless routers use? sometimes i want to use my bluetooth stereo headphones with the internet radio on the handset but i think bluetooth and wifi both use 2.4 ghz therefore it is difficult to maintain a stable connection. i am thinking about buying a dual mode router like one of apple's airport or something but i am not sure if my phone will work with it. and also is there anyway to fast forward and rewind with real player on nokia devices?

After much experimenting with themes, I've come to the conclusion that most of them DO NOT work 100% properly with the E71. Yes, the icons and background are all there, but there are problems with typing in say, a name in the new SMS contact field: if you are using a dark theme like Extraction by PiZero, the letters come out black as you type, making it almost impossible to see against the dark background! This also happens when you use the Dictionary and start typing in the search field, the letters come out black which is impossible to see against the dark background. This of course does not happen when using the default Nokia dark theme. Any comments anyone?
I experienced similiar problems... But much lesser compared to the E90 where e.g. the calendar was completely useless with some themes as everything was simply complete white or black ^^
Just got hold of my E71 and its probably one of the best investments I've ever made!
Anyway I've a few queries for you.
1. Nokia Maps / GPS
I was wondering whether there's any free GPS apps out there. Also can Nokia maps give audible directions like the gps systems used in cars as your moving? Or does your head have to be glued to the screen while you move dodging the lamp posts as you move? That feature would be useful!
2. Facebook application
Some phones seemed to be coming with a facebook mobile application of some sort. I was wondering whether theres one for the E71?
3.MSN Messenger
I found that msn messenger came with my phone, but its subscription based! Since when have you had to pay to use messenger! Is there a free version out there or any free stable alternatives without all the adverts?

After I disconnect the E71 from the PC via USB, the E71 won't read from the memory card. Only after I restart the phone, it will read from the memory card once again.
This happens everytime I disconnect the USB, even when I choose 'safely remove hardware'. Anyone else face this problem? And how do you disconnect your E71 from you PC?

Make sure you disconnect the USB device in Windows first - there should be an icon on the right side of the task bar which lets you do that. You should do this for any USB storage device you connect to your PC.
I bought my Nokia E71 recently and everything went fine after I discovered that I got a 'system error' each time I tried to add a new to-do item, just at the very end, after having pressed the Done button.
Any idea why this may be so?

I have a problem with Yahoo! Go V2. It was installed in my phone memory but when i want to use the app, it's not working.. i tried to remove it, but was prompted with an error msg "removing error". I tried to remove it using app manager as well but to no avail... please can someone help me to get rid of this thing?

i tried it, setting it to all e different options (sync, transfer, pc suite etc..) but it just doesn't charge. Does yours work?
The E71 search application seems to be a bit quirky. I want to search my contacts for a number, but it may be in the middle of a string. The phone number may be stored as +441903234567 and I want to search for the 234567. Search will only find the string in contacts if it's at the start of the number or has a space before it.
Strangely, it will do what I want when it searches emails!
Anyone got any suggestions how to achieve this, or another application that will do it?
When I try to open a 7mb pdf file using adobe reader part of the default quickoffice suite it displays the following error message:
'Memory low. Returning to recent documents list.'
I have more then enough memory on my card does the problem lie in the size of the pdf file?

Is there a calling card program that works on the E71? I find it hard to believe that Nokia does not have something that makes the use of calling cards or dial-around services easier.
What I am looking for:
1. Ability to store at least one dial-around or calling card number centrally.
2. Ability to assign a rule which contacts will use the dial-around number -- for example international calls (better) or
3. Ability to select individually which contacts will use this number (not as good as 2).
I just installed Nokia Conversations on my E71 and its pretty cool by the way it organizes messages according to contacts. but it appears that this application does not run in the background. If i attempt to open one of the messages in NC it takes me back to the the installation menu plus it does not have the the little circle icon on top of it. plus pressing the home key or the calender key closes the application. i used the s60 3rd edition feature pack 1 version from nokia beta labs. any suggestions?

I have a problem that is driving me crazy. I bought my E71 a week ago and I was happily accessing my email and facebook accounts with no problem. All of a sudden, a couple of days ago, I get an error message saying that cookies have to be enabled. The cookies are already enabled in the web browser settings, and I even cleared all information (cookies, cache, etc.) to no avail. This problem is still persisting. I tried enabling or disabling pop up windows, no difference. Help!!
1 - when you turn on the E71 for the very very first time, you are asked to indicate your 'home country' and, because I live in 3 places (BERmuda, BERlin and NY), I inadvertently entered BERMUDA (which is my legal Domicile), when I meant to enter BERlin - which is where I am currently and where I (just) got the phone.
The Question is: how critical is this choice and can it (ever) be changed? I ask this because Bermuda is very very small, and I was wondering if I am at a disadvantage (in getting any options when the E71 initializes) since that country may not have as much things set up as NY or BERlin.
2- I also inadvertently either opted to hide the little Cassette Icon for Voice Messages and wondered how I can get that back on to my Main Screen??
3- related to Question2: How do I put on/take away stuff on the Main Screen?
I would greatly appreciate any and all help you can give me. It's also a little tedious reading the German Manual.

i have an issue with nokia email on my e71 right now... so everything has been working fine until wednesday night when my phone ran out of batteries and died on me... now when I charged it back to full now I have discovered the Nokia Email has stopped pushing emails to my phone. I have tried reinstsalling Nokia Email and changing the settings to make it sync at all times and it still doesn't push emails to my phone. Please HELP!!

I finally got my E71-2 and I'm wondering if you have any case recomendations? I always put it in my pocket and I don't want anything bulky so I was looking into the aluminum or silicone cases. The aluminum ones I hear are great for protection but it cuts out some signal on your phone, especially areas where you don't get as much signal and can interfere with GPS signal. The silicone cases I'm afraid will break easily, especially if I drop it and won't really protect the phone. Help? lol.

Recently me E71 has not been able to find any Wireless networks, even when i am in known hotspots. It can never find wireless networks. This is a recent issue as ive been using wifi before! I dont k now what happened, it just stopped working. I've tried restarting the phone but to no avail. Any ideas?

I am having some problems with my E71.
I set my SMS mesages to be stored on my memory card and since then I am unable to open the messages. I can see them in the inbox but I just cant open them.
The reason that I first tried to change this was because my E71 keeps complaining about my SMS inbox even though it only has 100 messages in it.
I have seen a few threads on the web about this but they just say to hard reset the phone. Surely there is an easier way?

I text a lot but I don't like keeping the texts in the phone, so I'm looking for a "delete all messages" option - I had it in my old phone (Nokia 3120) but I haven't been able to find it in the E71. it is getting extremely tedious deleting messages one by one.

I just got an E71-2 . I got gmail up and working thru imap on the default email client. The imap works fine however I cant get the email notification to come up on the home screen. When i get a new email the tiny @ sign pops up on the right corner but thats it - I dont have the preview come up. I have email 1 notification as an enable application and I have gmail set to the email 1. I tried all 3 preview options but no luck. Below is the summary of steps I took. Are there any steps I am missing?
-Go into mode settings turn/turn off email notification 1
-Go into email settings to set up gmail
- Send an email to myself to make sure gmail is setup correctly
- Go into mode settings turn on email notification 1
- Go into email notification 1 settings / set mailbox to gmail / set preview to header and pop up.
- Restart phone.
I've changed my setting to never search for WLAN but it seems to buy me more time when I set it to only search every 10 minutes. Any other suggestions?
Can you give me any insight into how the E71 compares the E61i on earpiece volume? There are numerous threads on the E61i being low on earpiece volume and was hoping that if I upgraded to a E71 that this might be fixed.

Any ideas why my E71 mobile dictionary won't show Japanese characters on the screen. I have downloaded the Mobile Japanese dictionary into the dictionary application and whilst it speaks Japanese I just get little squares where the japanese text should be? I have deinstalled/reinstalled and tried Nokia support with no luck. Thanks Clive (please email reply?)

Is it possible to have calendar entries/appointments shown on the home screen/active standby for the next few days ? I've tried to remove anything else such as Wi-Fi, E-Mail, Task etc. But it still only shows the current or the next appointment ?

I bought this in the hope that Nokia would allow syncing emails with Outlook (I mean emails already in outlook), so from a calendar item, I can open the corresponding email and/or it's attachments. It's annoying to see the calendar item, but not be able to access any of the information in it. Any options?

Is this an known issue with the e71 firmware. If yes will it be rectified in the upcoming firmware release. If no is there any workaround of solution to this.

I have a problem with caller ID. If the numbers were saved with the full country and area code, the name of the caller will appear when receiving messages but not phone calls, and if I they were saved with the local format, the name of the caller appear only in phone calls but not messages. I know that this is related to the operator, but that never happened to me even with older Nokia models. I tried updating the software but it seems I have the latest one.
Any idea how it can be solved?

I just bought it 2 days ago, and while accessing the menu button from e front screen, I get a pop up menu appearing behind the icons, but the menu itself isn't visible. However, the menu itself does not occur while the other functions of the phone still works.
Would only be able to get this to work if the battery's taken out.

i installed the Skyfire beta browser on my E71-2 and its quite nice how the page renders. However its still involves a lot of scrolling which is a pain. nokia should included an optical mouse like the samsung did on the innov8 or perhaps something better on their non-touchscreen smartphones for web browsing. its a bit fustrating being able to only move the mouse or pointer in right angles or sraight lines. One more issue with this browser that i have encountered is that if you are using a wifi connection OR cell network provider's service and then need to switch to your cell network provider service (in my case AT&T) or wifi it says something is wrong with the connection settings.
I just downloaded the Skype Mobile (it was available for E61 - didn't see E71 - so downloaded the E61 version) and installed it on my E71 and tested. It works like a champ. Didn't see any problem with it at all. Made some skype to skype and skype to out calls already. Didn't test the video call portion (but it was part of the call menu) yet, so I don't know if that works or not. I thought this information will be useful to other E71 users too.

I have three big Problems :
1) I've never been able to open GPS maps. The application just hangs..
I downloaded map loader and saved the maps on to the E71, however this is of no use either.
Does GPS work only when GPRS is enabled cause this may be the probelm as I have not got a GPRS connection yet.
I have so far beein trying to connect using the wireless on my PC to get connected to the internet .
2) My phone has just hanged twice, unexlpicably, and pressing the home key for some time and trying to stop the running applications does not work either. The only way to get the phone woking again is to remove the battery and re-insert the battery again.... How painful.....
Now whenever I try to go to open GPS my phone hangs.. and I need to repeat the above process to get the phone working again.
3) Advanced Call manager does not seem to work. I have recorded a greeting and tried to set the phone into automatic answerng mode to play back the recorded mesage after 5 seconds, however this does not work. I have tried several options .. not use... I am wondering if the E71 has some serious flaws...
Can anyone help.. The phone must be workable however I need some help to get this functoining.... I'd appreciate all help to get this working.
this is a wonderful phone but the connection is not continuous, the internet keeps getting connected and disconnected. im using fring so my yahoo keeps logging in and off.. this cud be very annoying to my friends. happens over Wifi and gprs.

I used E51 earlier and when ever i used to get mails the preview of 2 mails were shown always on home screen , but in new E71 version 100.07.76 i am not able to see the preview , it gives me the option to see the email in numbers or snippets of unread mail . i am looking forward to see the same email view if possible for last two mails received , it was actually very very useful to me

Help guys, I'm having a problem with one deferred sms message which keeps on poping up on my outbox folder. I've tried deleting it / moving it my drafts folder still nothing happens my screen just flickers for a momment and i still have the deffered sms message on my outbox.
I'm guessing its a corrupted sms message, co'z when i try switching my sms save setting to "phone mem", my outbox folder clears up. Has anybody experienced this glitch?

I have tried using the radio over blue tooth stereo headphones and it won't work. Anyone know of an adaptor to make it work?
Also the phone crashes fairly frequently, as did my previous 6210, and when it reboots i removes all the customisation I have set up. Any way of saving the customisation somewhere so the reboot doesnt overwrite?
I've problem with my E71 messages. I'm keeping all my messages in my memory card. Yesterday I received 16 sms which was delayed for about 3 days. It's just normal sms from my contact list; not some prank sms etc. When I opened the first sms, it then overwrites ALL my previous messages in my inbox, sent, outbox, folders as well as email folders; meaning whatever I had in my inbox previously are all gone and been replaced with the 16 messages now. Messages in other folders were gone too. Email settings were deleted too.
I've tried to restart my phone, swap from memory card to phone and back to memory card etc but still couldn't get back those messages. I've read somewhere in the internet that the messages are stored in the "system" folder with a name like 01000_s or something like that and can be restored but I can't find it in my phone. I'm wondering if you've encountered such problem and would like to know what causes this in order to avoid having this problem again. And of course, if possible, would like to retrieve back those messages.

When using the "General" profile I am always given the possibility to hit "Silent" when someone calls me, stopping the vibration as well as the ringing. When I'm using a custom profile that has vibration only, that option does not appear.

May be I'm wrong and I don't get the idea of them, what I believe is that if I can download my country map I can use it as a "static" map, right? I would not need to be online to find streets or places.... does anyone know how to get this maps downloaded?

I was wondering, is there any appication that would automatically turn off the device on pre-seted time.
I just got a new E71 (grey model). I have ensured that I have the most up to date firmware version on the phone, but every time I try to connect to mobile internet it says "maximum number of data connections in use" and I have to dissconnect from planet 3, can I stop this from happening.
Additionally every time I try to launch nokia maps the phone freezes and reboots (at the point where it is asking whether to go on line?

nonetheless... few things.
1. how long does conversation take for your phone to snatch all the text messages you have? I usually delete them once a month, but i'm a heavy texter.... and it may take a minute or so the first 5 times it comes on.
2. Does your conversation end up making the os unstable ? I never had problems until i installed that app.
3. have you seen where the image where you highlight things ( such as going thru contacts) the background looks like it's a glitch or somethin happening in the background ? instead of an all white bg i get white with blue and black streaks (nothing theme dependent there..)

3 questions:
I'm able to send large files (mp3's) and I guess I'm also able to receive and download as well... but when I open the email and the attachment it tells me the attachment is large and do I want to open (retrieve) it completes the process I can't seem to find where the file is or went... did it store the file and is there settings to have the file download directly to my storage card?
2nd question:
If there a way to view picture from folders oppose to the viewer bundling all the pics together? I have over 200 pics on my memory card organized in folders and that saves time if I just need to view certain shots.
3rd question:
I grasp the concept of how email works on the phone but is there a way to keep the email account logged on?

I have the E71-2 and while i absolutely love the phone to bits I haven't been able to use the Maps app. Everytime i try to start it, the maps starts loading and the phone hangs. Nothing works, not even the power button I have to finally remove the battery to get it working. I tried reloading the firmware but still the same problem. At a loss really.
I'm knowing my new toy and getting some "problems" with it....
I have lots of contacts and many of them have more than one number (i.e. mobile, home, work number) when I get a sms or a call from one of these contacts in the display I can not get the contact's name or picture, it shows me the number as the operator sends, I have no idea of why it can not show me the contact's detail.. :(
Any idea of what should I configure/install/update?

I've just updated the firmware (thx god no problem with that!) and I've installed fring, it installs and everything ok, but I can never start the app. It's just shows me the "splash" screen but nothing more no error, no screen nothing just exit the app... any ide/suggestion?

I can't set the default contacts to SIM card. Contacts - Options - Settings only allow me to select the Name Display. There is suppose to be an option to set this as written in the menu guide.
I faced the same problem with either 100.x or 110.x firmware.

Great Site and thanks for looking after all the new members of the E71 family like me....I have just moved away from a newish E90-1 which I loved to bits, to make a long story short I dropped it from a great height and in the current economic climate i decided to replace it with the E71.....usually I can find my way around Nokia handy enough but i am stumped on 2 issues.....my E71 thinks it is connected to a car kit all the time, wheather i am in or out, near or far from my car...when i make or rec. a call the right hand short cut key displays handset which I have to press to answer/complete the call....secondly, i am using Road Sync from Dataviz as my email prog which I also used on my e90-1 and it is working great as always, but I cant get the mails to appear on the main display only my calendar entries.....Thanks again from Ireland for providing a great service, Cheers Brian

I just got a new E71 the other day, and can't seem to pick up any wireless networks. Is there some way of turning the radio off I can't find? I have told it to scan every minute and gone places where I know (and can see with other devices, including another E71 on a different provider's network) there are WLAN APs.
Also, if you're a Thunderbird user with the Lightning add-on, I find the SyncML feature on the phone coupled with something like ScheduleWorld works quite well for syncing your calendars.
In terms of syncing, I've found a significant weakness, which I will address in a separate topic below.
I have two questions regarding "Mail for Exchange" v2.7 for the E-Series. Both are about the feature of syncing contacts between the Exchange-server and the Nokia-mobile.
1) It seems that pictures embedded into the contacts are not synced. I have seen on other mobiles that it's possible to show the picture of the contact, when the specific contact calls. I think I have seen this on a E51. I can't get it to work on my new E71. Is it possible?
2) I want to use the feature to put my contacts in groups, e.g. "friends" or "customers" etc. I can do this on both sides - on the Outlook-application and on the phone - but those settings don't seem to be synced via "Mail for Exchange". I'm I missing something or is this just not supported? If not, is it a planned feature?

2 - set up a SIP phone app on the E71
This way I get unlimited cell phone use, don't need a voice plan, saving money on the combination Voice + data plan AT&T offers in the US (NYC). It seems too good to be true, does AT&T block SIPphone usage .. Are there obvious issues I haven't considered?
Has anyone found a way of adding Categories to the calendar function?
I find this is incredibly useful in managing my calendars; we have several group calendars within our office that different people have access to; they are synchronised through ScheduleWorld and sorted into the particular calendar by Category - so far, the only calendaring client I've had a problem with is the E71 - windows Mobile devices handle it just fine as to Thunderbird with Lightning and Outlook.
Is there perhaps a 3rd party app for this?

I think I may have found the reason why the E71 camera has a "purplish hue."
... It just may be the tint of the lens!!!
My girlfriend has an E66 and I compared her camera to mine. Her camera lens has a "bluish" tint (and her E66 pictures come out waaaaay better than my E71). My E71 lens has a "purplish" tint.
... Mike is there any way to confirm this with Nokia?
I've been looking to buy an E71, but I wanted to get it with a AT&T contract for cheaper. Unfortunately, AT&T doesn't sell the phone. I live in NYC, so if I was to go to the Nokia store, could they get me a contract? Or would I have to go to an independent Nokia and AT&T distributor? Thanks Much!
I've been using nokia email service (beta) and it worked fine till some days ago. I have no idea about the resason but it suddenly started to ask me the password and it says that it is incorrect... I cancelled the account in the web site and tried to create another one and asign my email account but it says that the email address is asigned to another user..:S does anyone have the same problem?

I finally album artwork on my Nokia E71 working, after several hours all my mp3's have full album art. Use MP3tag from http://www.mp3tag.de/en/ . Then point the software to your mp3 folder on the pc and load the mp3 tag details. When highlighting the album you want to add art too, right click and pick 'extended tags'. Paste the artwork into here and it works like a charm. Please note that it will only work for me if I delete any existing artwork and paste in a new picture. Load this onto you mobile and all should work.
I am very happy now that my phone music is fully tagged.

I have a novice problem with my E71. cant seem to connect my bluetooth headset (BH 102). I followed all the instruction in the manual but my phone is unable to detect the BT headset. It is able to locate other devices such as my laptop. Does anyone know a solution

My Nokia E71 went crazy. First it stopped showing my applications under the installations. Then after I removed the card, restarted, etc is showed the icons again, but wont start them, whatever I do. However, when I install new applications it adds them to the list and starts them normally.
What do you think, what is the problem? Any ideas?

I have a problem with the backlight - it simply doesn't turn on, at all. I have checked the light sensor settings, switched the phone off and on - nothing helps. I can see that the phone is on, but the display is dark without the backlight and is very hard to read or see what is on the screen.
Has anyone else experienced the same problem with their Nokia E71?

I wonder whether anybody else gets disturbed by the background noise (white noise) in the media player, it is clearly audible when you listen to music at low volume. I have done a comparison with the Nokia 5320 Xpress Music which has a crystal clear sound, in comparison the E71 sounds like crap. Any suggestions (since I listen to music quite often)?

Reasently I upgraded to the latest firmware in my E71-1 (Norwegian version). I got the same problem as any body else with the black text in the contacts menu. I had to drop the lovely Carbon theme from Taib. My question is, would it be a good idea to seek quality themes who work with the new firmware?. I tried several white themes but I really like the darker themes better. To find real good ones who fit the new firmware seems to be a challenge.

I'm currently an iPhone user and I'm seriously concidering an E71 for calls and messaging along with my iPhone for browsing and general multimedia stuff.
But I have a couple of questions about tethering:
-Is it possible to use the E71 for tethering to my current 1st gen iPhone/iPod Touch(Shouldn't be any different from doing it to a laptop, right?)
-Is it stable and easy to use?
-Is it fast?

I just have one question: I want to be notified when I receive an email, but I just want a written notification on the main screen, no ring-tone nor vibration. Although I am able to turn off the ring-tone, I am unable to switch off the vibrating notification for the email, without turning off the vibrating notification for phone calls, text messages, etc. When I turn vibrator off, it turns off for ALL settings. Do you know if there is a way to dissociate vibrator for phone calls than from emails?

I have definitely had some strange things occur with this phone in its first month of usage. I had to reinstall the firmware when the WLAN scanning stopped working. All it said was when attempting to activate WLAN scanning from the menu (the icon disappeared from the home screen) was "System Error".

I just got the E71 and love the phone. Everytime I'm on a call, the data packet is always on because I guess I have the Nokia Messaging free push email service. Is there a way to not have the data connection constantly on? I can hear some static sometime when I'm talking and it's annoying.

I have a Nokia E71 and cannot send emails from the gmail or pop 3 accounts set up on the device.
I can recieve emails and I know the settings are correct for the incoming and outgoing servers.
A google search has shown a number of people had this problem but I can't see any solutions.
An hour on the phone to Nokia care resulted in checking I have the correct system software on the phone ( I do).
Can any one help this problem?
i have had my E71 for a couple of months now. ever since i got it, i have been having issues with the camera. It dosent always work, when i press the "capture" button the screen goes blank and its like the phone crashes. I was advised to do an update of the software which i did today, and unfortunatly the update reset my phone and i lost everything!! is that normal? is there a way i can get my messages and my contacts back? Is there a way to fix the camera?

I have the E71 & have the latest Nokia Messaging. My only issue is how come you don't get a new email message on the home screen?. You only get the '@' icon in the top right hand corner of the home screen, but if you use the default email set up, you do get the new email message on the home screen. Will this be fixed in the next upgrade?.Any thoughts on this?.

My E71 has a defect, the green connection button would just start repeating as if you are holding it down. When you switch the phone of for a day or twe the problem is gone. I have sent it for repairs but my suspision is thet the ohone didnt show the defect when they switched it on.
Do you think this is a software or hardware related problem and more importantly what doi i do to fix it?

It connects, then drops, then refuses to reconnect. I then turn off and on both devices. Sometimes it then reconnects, but only for a while (maybe 90 minutes max.), and then I get the same dropping problems again. Then reboot, and have to delete and reestablish pairing to get any connection. And this only lasts for a brief moment as above...
Yes, I have set the connection/pairing as "authorised".
Do you have any idea whether this is a common problem, as it appears to be a well-thrashed topic on some other forums? I like my E71, but it appears to have a significant fault (or possibly a common user error?) - any ideas how I can remedy this?
I recently purchased a Nokia E71 and realized when it arrived that it didnt come with the original packaging. Do you know where I can buy JUST the original box, headset,case, manual etc.?
i have been using e71 for almost 6 months now and very satisfied. Since last 3 days the gps is not getting activated. Do you know why it would have been not able to find satelite.

same problem here as well. The phone crashes on some occasions for no reason !! weird ??? i hope we have another firmware for this

I have some issues and could not find a solution how to fix it.
I live in australia. I use Three network provider. Recently, I have just bought Nokia E71 with using Optus network by accident (I bought the second hand one). The phone is unlocked so I could use with my Three sim. However the phone itself is original from Optus so they are something from Optus setting still mixing in the phone such as Boot up screen logo, Optus Zoo menu and a lot of setting and application from Optus that can not delete.
My question is how could I change it to Three network completely (I mean from boot up logo til application from Three) or if it was impossible to do that, may be just back to factory setting WITHOUT any stuffs from Optus.

I just bought my E71 and I already love it!
My problem is related to the keyboard.
I live in Germany and here all the Keyboards have the QWERTZ layout and so does the software of my E71. The problem is, that my keys have the QWERTY layout so now when I push the Y Button, it writes a Z and so on so I was wondering whether there is some sort of software which could change this. I would be fine with keeping the QWERTY keys.

I only got my e71 yesterday, and inadvertantly set up a link to my yahoo email account using the phone's built in email (logo for it is a "@" in an envelope) as well as on my network Three. The Three email app uses push email instantly from my yahoo account ("Y!" logo), but I only get emails from the e71 version of the account every 10 minutes or so. If I'm perfectly happy using the Yahoo account on Three, is there any way I can delete the link to my account on my phone (@ logo)? It means that I now have to check my phone twice for the same email, and it's getting tedious. I just can't find a way of deleting accounts on the phone.

it doesnt show my contact names whenever i get a call or a sms unless i add in the prefix.
now i have 400+ contacts, tell me there's another way around this...isnt there a regional setting in the E71? where all the number and names get recognised automatically?
My sms notification bubble has dissapeared I was wondering if you know how to get it back on my phone.

Anybody knows how to move messages in phone memory to memory card. It doesnt prompt me while switching the memory and I couldnt see either a c:\sysytem\mail or e:\system\mail folders as somebody suggested to delete it and switch the memory to get the prompt back.
I use X-plore as file explorer.
Is there a Web site were I can re-download the Live Mail app that originally came with the e71?
P.S. I was able to download "Messenger_S60_3_0_v_2_0_0_Signed.sis" but it doesn't seem to let me access my msn account.
