Nokia E71 Fanatics Blogs: It Seems The New E71 Firmware Has Increased The Photo Quality

  • Mahdi · 5 months ago
Any idea when a firmware update will be released for the E71x?
  • Franz · 5 months ago
I don't see any improvement over the last firmware update to 210.21.006. That had already improved the camera a lot and repaired the purple tone all pictures used to have.

Now the only purple/bluish haze I can notice is when I take pictures in a dark room with almost no light.
  • David · 5 months ago
I don't know about this. The 2 photos are not taken with the same set up of cans, they are taken on different times where the natural light around can differ alot. If it was the exact same set up of cans and so on within a time persiod of maybe an hour, i would be more eager to believe. But this is just not enough convincing circumstances.

Does any one know how to fix dead phone because of incomplete upgrade process? I tried to upgrade my fw to 300 version but during the process, my usb got disconnected and everytime I tried to power on my phone, it just show the backlight with nothing on it. I tried to follow the instructions that I found from the web, but haven't been successful yet. Please help. Thanks
  • pavel · 5 months ago
During the update process, it shows that the USB is disconnected, but in fact the process is still ongoing.
  • Handy · 5 months ago
I realized that, but it shows a message too saying the connection was diconnected and try it again and my phone just won't start. I think it's dead. Can anyone help me on how to get it back? I still saw some lights when i turn it on, it just didn't show anything on the screen. Please help!

Use Phoenix software. Many howto's on the internet
  • Peter · 5 months ago
Very poor comparison. And even worse is to make a judgment based on such a source. They are different photos, both have been resized much smaller than the original and most importantly the light source may not even be the same.
  • guest · 5 months ago
nokia's update servers seem down since it complains it cannot connect to the internet (and it is detecting that a new firmware is available, so it IS connecting somewhere)

by the way, it is available for the e71-2 version, product code 0559585
  • Jorde · 5 months ago
Use Navifirm to download all files for the NAM firmware (product code 0559585) except the .c00 (as that one is missing for some reason, hence the reason people cannot use NSU properly). Should be 9 files in total.

Once you grab those 9 files, navigate to the RM-346 section and grab the .c00 from a EURO product code.

You should now have 10 files in total.

Move these 10 files to the following directory:

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nokia\Nokia Service Layer\A\nsl_service_module_00001\vpls\http://www.dsut.online.nokia.com.ot...oducts\r m-357

That is where NSU places its files when it downloads a new firmware. By placing the files there, NSU will detect a new firmware but instead of downloading it, it will see it there already and just start upgrading it.

    That is it.

I live in Canada. The software on my phone is version 100.07.76 and when I try to update it, it says the phone software is already up to date. Version 300.21.012 is out already, and we still haven't gotten version 200.21.118.

    What the hell?

Is there another way I could update the firmware without having to use Nokia PC suit?
  • europa · 5 months ago
I snapped this three photos yesterday and patched them together in a panorama. Looks pretty slick, to me, compared to the old v210...
    http://tr.im/qWjg
  • Mohseni · 5 months ago
There is no way that was taken with an E71! Other than patching them together, did you use any other effects?
  • europa · 5 months ago
nope; just used the exposition compensation function of the e71 camera to black out the unneeded. then patched the three photos in photoshop and resized the bunch to 1920 horizontal
  • Huub · 5 months ago
Hey europa, what is the 'exposition compensation function'? im dutch, so im not sure what you mean with that function.

    Hi,
My E71 is on the 3 Network in UK and running firmware 100.07.76 but the Nokia updater tells me there are no update available.
Any ideas how I can update?
  • Abdel · 5 months ago
I am also on the 3 network in the UK and have just found that I can't update my phone;s firmware either. I use the Nokia PC Suite application to check and am told that I have the latest firmware. I then go on to check at the Nokia website and check using a code I find behind the battery and am told the same thing....could it be that the E71s given with the 3 network are in some way different to non-3g phones?
  • ToG · 5 months ago
3 need to test and okay updates before they allow you to apply them, ALL uk phone providers do this.
  • dpmcalister · 5 months ago
I got so fed up waiting for 3 that I flashed my phone and put in a generic product code so I could update the firmware. A Google around will find the information you need if you want to do it (my phone still works fine with 3 and now I don't have any of their pre-installed rubbish and an updated firmware :))
  • Narayanaswamy · 5 months ago
I really do not see a change
The same blueish grains still fill ur snap! :(
  • Ian Uygongco · 5 months ago
It might have been the existing lighting at the place she took the first and last photos. Natural lighting in the area can affect the quality of the photos.
  • mike · 5 months ago
There is a BIG MISTAKE in 300.21.012 firmware for Nokia E71-1 for Russian market (confirmed by Nokia already).

If you update 210.x.x. firmware to 300.21.012, you will lost ability to write Russian. You will be able to use English and Ukranian, but no Russian :(
What a shame for Nokia for one of the most significant market!

Verdict - DO NOT UPDATE IF YOU NEED RUSSIAN!
  • Kerouac · 5 months ago
I'm impressed that the new firmware enables a user to turn Coke into Sprite.

The Jesusphone is missing a marketing opportunity here.

    Regards,
    K
  • Martin · 5 months ago
@Kerouac: Also impressed that my E71 is able to change the appearance of cans and multiply them as well lol.

This would have been better if you had used two phones to take the same picture (one with the outdated firmware and one with the updated firmware).
  • Miked · 5 months ago
I agree, comparing those two photos is hardly a good judge. Maybe there is something wrong with my hardware, but unless I have a huge amount of light, my pictures are terrible. I got better photos in a 5 year old Motorola. I am not impressed with the E71 (Nokia messaging down so much, sync issues with multiple address, formatting of recurring all day appointments, and frequent phone lockups). I may hold out for the new firmware, but ready to give up on the E71 and go back to a Motorola Q9. It was a hell of a lot more reliable.
  • Karl · 5 months ago
Change your product code here: http://www.e71blog.com/2009/01/how-to-change-yo...

I have an unlocked Rogers E71 and I changed it to the vanilla code mentioned in my link (very easy to do)

But when I try to update to this new firmware I am also have the network problem. Stupid updater says it fails to connect (firewall is turned off!!)

Anyone else having this issue? That new firmware looks sweet!
  • MIchel · 5 months ago
it is strange that after i updated my nokia to this firmware , im not being able to connect to my home wireless network, i think this update has a WLAN bug....does anyone experienced this this also???????
  • XLR8 · 5 months ago
Hey guys I have emailed Mike with new photos and even N95 in comparison.

    Enjoy
  • Mo · 5 months ago
I live in Canada and my E71 is locked to Rogers. The current firmware on it is v100.07.76 and when I try to update it, it says the phone software is already up to date.

Is there a way I can upgrade to the new version without messing up my phone? If so, can you please provide an step by step procedure?

    Thanks
  • Karl · 5 months ago
    Hi Mo,

see my post a few above. I have a Rogers E71 and I changed my product code very easily. I still can't get the firmware update though. It finds it but it keeps timing out. Must be something wrong with the Nokia server.
  • Martin Paljak · 5 months ago
I feel that the firmware indeed has improved photo quality. I made some pictures in the same room where I have made a lot of them and colors do feel brighter and less noise in the picture, also sunshine on reflection on something bright does not screw up the rest of the picture so much.

I suggest to upgrade if possible (E71 in EU)
  • Seb · 5 months ago
Upgraded from 210 to 300 last night on my E71-1 (phone originally bought in Switzerland).

Phone is really faster for me. I don't experience lags while browsing menus anymore. The web browser was painfully slow (esp. displaying pictures), even on Wi-Fi. Now the browser starts in a second and display a page like Google in another second. It was taking like 10 seconds before.

Settings for the SIP client changed a bit (username must have the FQDN now).

My phone was crashing once or twice every week, hopefully this release fixes that (changelog mention they corrected memory leak).

Another issue that is hopefully fixed : IMAP client and calendar sync (with mail for exchange) hanging.

I don't notice a major difference on the quality of pics.
  • karl · 5 months ago
Still can't update for me. It sees the new firmware and everything but still gives a network error when installing :(

I tried this on 2 different networks too. Any other Canadian users having this issue with the Updater?
  • Timi · 5 months ago
wow the results are amazing! cant wait to update!
  • Erik · 5 months ago
Does anybody know whether with this new firmware a seperation of VIBRATION can be set for ringtones / SMS notification / Calendar Reminders ? This is the only thing at the moment which would make me doing an upgrade to a new Firmware

    Many thanks in advance

    Hello All,

I am currently using the NOKIA E71-1 model, and I am in the USA. I purchased this phone unaware of the NAM/Internationl being seperate models. My E71-1 is only 1 month old and I haven't been using it. I am a AT&T subscriber and currently am using the E71x. But I don't like. E71 is waaaay better.

I would like to trade my NOKIA E71-1 for the NOKIA E71-2. Anybody willing to trade E71 models?

    Let me know. E-mail me:

HI, I was experiencing the same problem as some of the others have mentioned here - I have an E71-RM357 (NAM) version and the Nokia software updater was showing availability of the new version (300.x.x) but kept erroring out when you try to install with the message that it could not connect to the internet.

However, when I try now, it says I'm on the latest version 200.21.118! Maybe Nokia has recognized that there's a goofup and taken it off :)

Anyway, I'll keep searching for the same and post it up here.
  • Mike Macias · 5 months ago
Wow just wow! Tons of comments. One of our reader did his own comparison just before he updated. Check out his article, maybe his is a little more believable than mine...

Well, there is a slight difference.. What do you think?
  • jo3c · 5 months ago
if you would carefully check the digits on the bill you will see the clarity on the newer firmware :)
  • Sam · 5 months ago
Well I upgraded my 3 E71 yesterday (changed the product code) and I have to say that I think it's a worthwhile thing to do. Camera is definitely better, not the best, but there’s an improvement in picture quality that’s quite marked over the previous software version. Menu’s appear quicker as does the web responsiveness that others have mentioned. The E71 is, in my view, still the best phone out there!
  • XLR8 · 5 months ago
  • ThaMaestro · 5 months ago
hey accelerate, nice comparison, well done. u can see a clear difference between fw 200 & fw 300 on the E71. however, scientifically, its a low valued comparison, since the boundary conditions for all photo's are different. the position of the camera changes (albeit slightly), the objects photographed changed ....

can u perhaps try to make a comparison by making a photo of 1 object which doesnt change with each picture, and with the lens position at the same location for all photo's?
    that'd be nice :)

    nonetheless, nice effort, thumbs up!
  • Gee · 5 months ago
Lol, is this supposed to be a photography training forum or one where we learn about new addons for the E71.
  • cb2000a · 5 months ago
    Okay.....you really need to dust...

Yeah looks better..is the video improved at all?
  • xuefeixyg · 5 months ago
Photo quality had been improved in the firmware 210.Basically,can not see the advanced improvement in 300.Waiting more photoes.
  • arjunsinghal · 5 months ago
I upgraded to the new firmware. I was earlier using the Native Messaging app to access GMail IMAP. Now however, each time I punch in a gmail address while trying to register a mail account on my phone, it asks to install Nokia Mail...

    Anyone know why?
  • XLR8 · 5 months ago
    Thnx ThaMaestro,

Unfortunately, I could not simulate the exacts same light conditions in that room when I took the fw300 E71 photo.

The only comparison for me to make would be a Nokia N95 vs Nokia E71 fw 300 in that same room with same light conditions done exactly after the other.

I will try it in the next day or so. Fw 200 I cannot load as the E71 phone cannot downgrade firmware's.

But certainly the image is more sharper and clearer along with the purple gone :)
  • wplay12 · 5 months ago
I found some error in Help -> Tutorial at 300.21.012.

e.g. Time Mngement -> Office applications (broken link)
Keys -> Power key (and) Keyboard (broken link)

Any update on when product code: 0569371 is going to be updated again? It looks like it was included in the firmware update then removed from the list...
  • Tom · 5 months ago
Hi all. I have two questions:

    I have an E71-1.

    1. Is it possible to change the product code after updating the firmware to 300.....? Somewhere I read something about "not hackable". i don't know what that means. But since my phone came with English, Malay, Indonesian and other languages but German I have to go to the shop after every firmware update and let them change it back to English, German, Italian etc. Will that be possible again?

    2. I was using Mail for Exchange and after deinstalling it I am still asked to enter a lock code. I can change the lock code to whatever I wish but I cannot deactivate it. Is there a problem with this lock code after doing an firmware update? Best case would be it is gone.

I would like to try the new version, so thanks a lot

    Hi guys!
I've updated my E71 to the last firmware version but after a week of use i "see" a worst standby time :-( does anyone have the same problem?Thanks...
  • Name · 5 months ago
Gawd, I didn't think the camera could get any worse. My 5 year old Motorola already put it to shame.
  • Gee · 5 months ago
    I just hacked firmware V300.X.X.X

heres how i did it. Make sure u copy the files inside Copy_to_A to the A drive. (Not the folder)

Installed Ir Remote too unsigned :D
  • Gee · 5 months ago
FYI, I use CameraFX instead of the Native App that comes wit the E71 to take pics because u can manipulate the colors and tones any way you want and set profiles for different lighting conditions.
I still feel theres a slight purple tone in the native camera module.

Someone should come up with a camera Mod for E71. Now that would be cool. :P

hi, i just got an e71 from a relative. mine is rm-346 with firmware v110.07.127. i'm thinking to update the firmware but prefer v210 over v300, which is currently available for my phone through NSU. is there any way i can update to v210 instead of v300?

Am from India and my e71 Firmware version is 200.21.118 is it safe to upgrade it to new...? am a GPRS user and is there any problem with GPRS or any connectivity in new version?
