Nokia E71 Fanatics Blogs: My E71 Battery Life Has Been Stellar. Do You Have Similar Results?

Anecodtally, I'm also getting very long battery life. I'm leaving Bluetooth on all the time too. What does seem to drain the battery fast is if I enable WiFi. I'm guessing that's not nearly as power-optimized as the 3.5G chipset.
  • Mike Macias · 1 year ago
Yes WiFi is a huge drain. I find it useless since I have an unlimited data plan and 3g is just as fast.

My battery life if great, although when i speak on the phone for an hour or two the phones backside(for the most, but the entire phone) gets really hot, and i cant figure out why? anyone with similar problem?
  • Mike Macias · 1 year ago
Just checking in with you all, still have four bars left. Gonna let it sit overnight and see how it looks tomorrow morning.
  • Emman · 1 year ago
yeah, when I'm surfing through youTube, it gets hot. And also when I use my E71 to connect my laptop to Internet. My instinct tells me to stop for a moment...cause i doubt my phone would explode...based on my experience that any kind of battery that gets hot is dangerous!
Any idea from the experts how to handle this overheating?
  • Mike Macias · 1 year ago
hmmm, I haven't had these problems.
  • crynobone · 1 year ago
Happen to me too, browsing the web using nokia default browser easily cause overheating.

    Firmware: 110.07.127
  • zeleftikam · 1 year ago
Yeah, my E71 gets hot from talking on it for a long time. Also if I use Google Street View for a long time, or broadcast for a half over on Qik. That heat you feel is THE POWER!!!

I've been getting about 5 days on one battery charge, if the phone is on standby (no Wifi, no bluetooth, no GPS, occassional sms/calls/internet usage). I think it's amazing!

Used the GPS a reasonable amount on a recent camping trip (hence no power to recharge) and this seems to drain the battery quite a bit, so it only lasted three days.

I'm still very impressed with it.

That's true. the battery life for N82 is poor in comparison to E71. N82 is my wife's phone and she does comment that battery life isn't as good as other Nokia phone she had. She's just a regular user (i.e. no Wi-Fi, no BT or surfing)

only complain about E71 is that it heats up over a long conversation.
  • sic · 1 year ago
Yes mine is great , i charge about 3 days , i use wifi on and off, and bluetooth is always on, plus i play games, browse the net, install/uninstall apps, talk etc loving it
  • Javier Oropeza · 1 year ago
When i use my e71 as a modem via bluetooth for my laptop, i can usually kill the battery in 8 hours. This is with a constant 3.5g connection downloading large files (1gb+) and bluetooth on, as well as browsing the web on the phone, making an occassioanl call, and sending smss through out the day.

Mike. When you say you have ur 3g turned off unless u are using it, what do u mean? is there a way to turn it of?
  • Mike Macias · 1 year ago
Settings > Phone > Network > Network Mode > GSM

When I want it turned back on I switch it back to Dual mode, like when I'm gonna be doing a lot of downloading or browsing.

I always sweat running out of juice, but there's a new generation of small portable rechargeable external batteries. I got the Just Mobile Gum Pro USB battery pack thing (http://www.expansys-usa.com/d.aspx?i=172465)... which didn't work at first until I got a Nokia USB voltage converter thingie (http://shop.nokia.co.uk/nokia-uk/product.aspx?s...). (The Gum outputs 5 volts; the E71 needs a 6 volt charge.) Anyhow, that works pretty good and it gives me basically infinite battery time now.

Nice! I just got my hands on a Proporta Mobile Charger a few weeks ago, full review soon to come.

I was running on half of the last bar for 2 days. The low batt warning was constantly repeating itself but I could still sms and call during that period. The E71 is indeed an excellent piece of work. I don't regret spending my money.

I have been using an E71 with multiple email configurations. I find the battery life is OK now, in fact quite good. Where it fails miserably is using Nokia's Exchange client, a working day without charging would be a rare occurence. Connecting to a PC as a modem wipes the battery out as do Jokiuspot. Seven (beta) and Three UK's version of the client gets me a whole day. The Nokia messenging client just out of beta is even easier on the battery, 2 days and that is using 3g or 3.5g all the time, intermiitent bluetooth and surfing using the handset.

When I first got my E71 the battery life was indeed fantastic. However, unfortunately, now the story is entirely different. Despite very low usage I am charging in the early afternoon, switching off at night and getting an empty battery in the late morning. Yesterday I made no calls, sent a dozen texts and didn't use the internet (though I run Email and Zonetag constantly) and the story is the same. I will be phoning Orange and getting a replacememnt battery - this is horrific after only a couple of months use!

6 Months ago i was the proud owner of an e51. I was astonished with the battery life. At the same time I owned an n95.

Now I own an n82 and an e71.

I use the cell phone as a Notebook substitute: chat (Nokia, MSN and yahoo are on about all the time), e-mails (nokia email), servers remote sessions, MP3, Bluethoot file transfer (many times a day), a lot of conversations, camera use as a document scanners (few times a day), heavy use of widsets and browsing. The results are as this:

    Work day:
N82 ---> needs to be recharged at noon. If not, it will go off about 3 or 4 p.m.
E71 ---> it holds up to the next day. about 10 a.m., but i have to admit that in this case i slow down some use.

The E71 has an EXCELENT battery life. Is as good as my old e51.

E71 rocks!!..my usage per day is of
8 hours of seven push email for 4 accounts,
chatting on yahoo, gtalk n others for 8 hours,
web surfing for around an hr,
    2hours to talk time,
20-30 sent/recieved text messages and i get somewhere around 2-2.5 days of batery life

My E71 has great battery life!! I hardly use my N82 because the battery life is really poor. I only take it with me when i go to parties and such and even then i usually take my E71 with me.

I managed to draing a full e71 battery in about 5-6 hours. At first I thought that battery is just as good as others. My use often includes tethering my laptop via bluetooth to browse over the AT&T 3G network, while making calls, and pushing work and personal email from a regular 8-5 work day. i also do A LOT of browsing on the go and have my network set to dual mode, more often on the 3g network. This is what seems to be the huge difference. i usually have to chrage every night, but one day i used gsm network the whole day and only lost 2 bars by the end of the night.,

I still love my e71 and the battery! =)

Just to update all of you.

My battery lasted into the 3rd day, with mostly the same configurations in the article. I did some extra uploading with the Shozu application, about 7-8 images with 3g turned on.

My battery started puttering out around 3pm and finally died at 5pm.

That's nearly 3 full days of heavy email use! Gotta love it.

Mine was fine until I updated the ROM to the latest version about a week ago. Battery life is now around half of what it was.
  • Vinit · 1 year ago
I could drain my battery in abt 5-6 hrs... The GPS sucks the life out of the battery! when on roaming and the GPS in use.. the ph barely stays on for abt 6 hrs.

Just wanted to know if it will make a difference if I keep my phone on the charger all night long? I keep hearing that the battery life depletes if you charge for too long regularly.. although I cant justify logically!
  • singsonn · 1 year ago
The battery life of the E71 is amazing. I confirm the 5 days with regulars phone calls and texts, BT off and Wifi On. The only concern for me is with the mp3 player, this make my phone loose his battery very rapidly. Anyone has seen the same?
  • Adrian · 1 year ago
I think there's something wrong with my battery or my phone.
It doesn't last more than 2.5 - maximum 3 days with almost no use at all.

For example now , after 60 hrs : BT - OFF, WLAN scanning:never, screen brightness 25% , 5 -10 mins web surfing and no more than 5 minutes of phone calls it's down to 1 bar and it'll die soon.
  • Adrian · 1 year ago
Tim, by ROM you mean the firmware ? I also have the latest firmware but installed it as soon as i got the phone so i don't know if it's the firmware that drains the battery ...

I'd be interested in hearing what firmware the guys that say their battery lasts them 5-6 days have, maybe the latest firmware is buggy.

By the way, is there a way to downgrade to a previous firmware ?
  • Tim · 1 year ago
Yes, by ROM I meant the firmware. From other forum members downgrading the firmware requires a trip to a Nokia service centre.

i have bought E71 two days before ,i had a problem in that ,my phone gets charged with in 30 min and it comes battery full, but while i use my phone its stands only 1 hr approximately and its suddenly shutdown without showing any batery details and the battery bar is full wen it gets off..Is my phone having problem or my battery ...please give me usefull tips ..
  • Uncle Sam · 10 months ago
I never get the six days battery life unless I turn off the phone. I also use the simple function mostly.
  • SIP · 10 months ago
    Same here.
It lasted me ard 3 days, with very little usage.
    Couple of sms and calls.
    Something wrong with it?
  • Ali · 7 months ago
Had the phone for around two weeks and it lasts two full days. I'm sure it will last for three but I don't want it to die on me mid-day. What I'm running:

    Nokia Email 24/7
    MSN Messenger 2 hrs/day
    Java Games 1 hr/day
    Internet 30 Minutes
    Calls 1-2 hrs/day

I was hoping it to last a bit longer but I guess it's because I'm running MSN when I'm not really using it as well.
