Hello everyone

I just read the review and I'm kinda surprised what I was reading. I have an n97 and I had a IPhone 3 GS 32 gb which i exchanged with somebody for the n97. The Iphone is a better quality phone why? well because:
-the screen is much better, the n97 looks kinda cheap and the colours ar not very nice
-the navigation works. Nokia's nav is crappy be honest people nokia maps it's not that well.
-the touchscreen is very responsive to the commands given the n97 touchscreen is terrible because of the ammont of force you have to put on the screen.
-the widgets are nice but the widgets from the iphone are better by far.
-itunes store has more to offer than ovi
-games are great on the iphone
-email on n97 looks cheap
-browsing is terrible on the n97 and gets worse with the stupid little arrow ( same as on the e71)
-commands don't always respond to the action given
-the camera from the n97 looks terrible I expected more from a 5 mp carl zeiss lens camera.
-the whole phone (n97) looks good when you hold it in your hand until you turn it around. C'mon people it looks like a knock off very cheap compared to the housing of the iphone, bb,e71.
-the sound is terrible the Iphone beats nokia every day of the week
-headphones from nokia are bad.

On the good side

-Battery life is super. I had to charge my Iphone twice a day
-The keyboard is great far better than the iphone because when your typing it doesn't eat letters or change words.
-the thing I like about nokia is that they are easy to use.
-It doesn't blow up or get overheated. I bought my Iphone at t-mobile but within a week returned it because it got so hot that I couldn't even hold it in my hands. I got a new one btw
-Not so expensive as the Iphone but not worth the price.
- The storage is great extra trunk space for your junk lol, sorry apple better luck next year

this phone doesn't live up to the hype. I couldn't wait to get my hands on it and now I have one but think to myself this was the dumbest trade of my life. I really hop that the e71 is better. I'm really considering it

Nice Review. I think E71 is better over all, of course it has some demerits with it. I am using E71 for last 4 months, I have seen some of the demerits that is the "Camera and GPS" . the Camera Quality is the most disappointing part its worse than a VGA camera, and the GPS, as other said that not working properly sometime it hangs when we use the GPS....... So, beside these problem this cell is an awesome one.....

I'm using Gravity, which I reviewed here at the blog. If you use tehkSeven's
theme with "7" icon set, you'll get the Twitter logo instead of the standard
Gravity icon.

Nice review! I'm currently trialling an N97 in a tour across the USA -- it's a great device, but I think I prefer the more compact keyboard on my E71.

Great review, the comparison to the E71 is relevent to me who just switched between the two phones.

In my opinion the keyboard on the E71 is hard to beat, and I having trouble getting used to the keys on my new N97, key feedback is to weak and the prediction is strange and I can't really get used to that either.

What goes for keyboard layout E71 is better planned, function key, shift are better situated for use who use swedish characters (äö have own keys and å are fn+p), N97 have åäö on fn+.lk which requires two key presses on the same thumb = slows your writing severly.

I really miss the CTRL-key as well.

As for size it does not bother my, but the internal memory runs out fast, and the standby app eats RAM like crazy.

E71 is the best phone I've ever had, and the N97 does not beat it as a phone, but better camera, large display, standby apps and touch screen makes it fun phone. Fun is good. Especially when you're on vacation.

The one thing not mentioned here is the free QuickOffice on the E71. This (and the keyboard) is the reason I didn't go for the iPhone. (Oh, and the storage, but I really want 60Mb plus so I'm going to have to wait a while. :) )

I suppose it's all about what you use your phone for. I do a lot of writing on it, some email, plenty of browsing and lots of listening to podcasts. The one thing that lets the E71 down is the browsing. There are far too many web sites that fail when using either the native browser or Opera (they just look messy). This alone causes me to continually look at other phones (iPhone, PalmPre, Storm, N97).

Having said that the fact that I can easily create, read and edit Word documents on the E71 is not replicated by any other phone (certainly without spending money) so I can't imagine I'll be changing anytime soon.

Totally agree. I bought the E71 as a "business oriented phone" but Mail for Exchange is a shame and some of the new updates on Nokia Mail are only for the E75. Nokia shows very little interest in those like me with "old" phones.

Agree, performance is not good. I ended up using ffmpeg with a customized command line to get nice, playable videos. Using h264 for video and aac we end up with an excellent movie in less than 300 mb. The problem is that you have to reencode and wait ... for that time consuming task.

One of the primary uses of my E71 is mobile photo blogging. The fact that the N97 has a 5mp camera is enticing, but it appears to me that it's a two-handed device, whereas the E71 can be used effectively with one hand. It's one of the things I like about it. I also tend to have multiple apps open at the same time (Google, GMail, Gravity are ALWAYS open), so the news about less RAM in the N97 is another concern. There is no way I would jump to the iPhone, 3GS notwithstanding, because it would be a step backward with regard to the camera. I think I will stick with the E71 for a while longer.

Can you comment on the capabilities of video playback?

For example, can it play (with assistance of the right application, core player for example) 640x480 xvid's (or resolutions close to standard definition), or standard def x264 videos?

I dont expect it to playback 720p equivalents so no need to test if you dont want.

I found the E71 to be below acceptable when it came to playing back xvids and such.

Excellent review, thank you very much. What follows now is more a dig at Nokia and not the fine folks at e71fanatics. . .

I was surprised to read, "I’ve never had [the Nokia E71] lock up or shut down apps on me." This user, for one, has experienced E71 lock-ups and many, many error messages attributing faults to memory. It happens, and to read that it might happen more, on the N97 - well, that's not good news.

"Hopefully Nokia can fix this problem with firmware updates." is another trigger of warning bells. Nokia's history regarding the timely delivery and ability to resolve problems using firmware updates is not good. The lesson here is, if you're waiting for resolution requiring a firmware update, you're going to be waiting a long time. Nokia has your money already and there's diminished incentive for them to update your phone, when they would prefer to sell you a new one.

The observation regarding the browser pretty much illustrates my point above. Why not deliver an update to the E71's browser? Because,if you want an improved browser experience, it's better to sell you a new phone, instead. That's why many of us have Opera Mini or Skyfire installed on our E71s.

It appears that, in the N97, Nokia has continued its practice of concentrating on incremental advances in hardware (meant to inundate the market with a phone for any price point). However, their software is suffering - badly. I wonder when the flash of the latest form factor improvement will no longer be able to cover up the software deficiencies.

Essentially, I wonder when folks will start to say of Nokia, "the emperor has no clothes."

Thanks for the review! Looks like I'll be sticking with my E71 as size is a huge concern for me, and I don't use that much of the media stuff on my phones, but do end up with a lot of apps open. Seems the E71 is really the best phone for what I use it for.

I agree with Phil - I was a card-carrying E71 fan for a long time but the new iPhone 3GS persuaded me to give Apple another try. I've had it for three weeks now and am LOVING it.

The N97 just doesn't make the grade. It doesn't excel at anything like the E71 or iPhone.

I have an E71, and I must say it is one of the best phones I have ever had.
I am a bit shocked that the E71 has more RAM than the N97!

Well, that seals it then, I'm off to get the iPhone 3GS. I was hoping the N97 was a killer phone, but the 3GS removes the last sticking points that I had.
