Nokia E71 Fanatics Blogs: Nokia E72 Hands On Video Demonstration

I own a E71 and although I like it, I'm not very enthusiastic about the E72. End of year 2009 and - woohoo - market leader Nokia introduces transitions in the menus and some smaller changes on it's flagship? No real need for E71 owners to switch. I will keep my E71 and go Blackberry or iPhone afterwards. Nokia should release major software updates for it premium phones. Why do I have to buy new hardware to get the benefits of a minor system update?

I think I am going to try with android phone or RIM.

The small improvement and feature doesn't justify the change and Nokia has a policy for the mobile operating system that doesn't show a lot of improvement like iPhone OS, Android or WebOs.

If I need to change WebOs to get more software feature I'd rather go to another OS that is updated. The hardware is enough for my need. We have 3G, WLAN, 3 or more MPx camera, bluetooth I don't need more. What I need is just software and User interface improvement.

I'm not up on the techy bit but that opti-navi gadget looks quite jumpy and the web browser scrolling looks like it might be quite tricky...could be a good thumb workout.

You're right, the only new feature seems to be the optical navigator and a bit more grunt. If anything the E71 looks more stylish, especially in the dark. I think I'll keep my E71 for a year and upgrade to the Xperia2 once it becomes more affordable.

The question is, will they make a white steel version?

F*** this. I hate it when Nokia introduces the new lineup and then after less than half a year announce the revived lineup with just some minor changes. I bet the E71 could run the E72 ROM just fine except for the optical scroll which looks to be really shitty.

I'm keeping my E71 for the time being and looking at Android phones ... just waiting for the right one to come along.

Oh and sorry for the harsh words but Nokia has pissed me of more than once.

The best thing they may have done is to resize the phone display. The e 71 display is too small and the e 71 display it is still too small.

Glad I'm not the only one thinking this. The E71 is already getting a bit outdated compared to browsing the web on an iPhone or Android phone and the optical navigator looks like a major pain in the ass to scroll thru websites with. Nokia is the new Palm, didn't keep up and is heading down the road of irrelevance.

I agree with kepec. It was better not to demonstrate this Optical Navi in this clip. The navigation realy looks bad. I'm not sure but I think not many e71 owners will upgrade to the e72 just because of the specs, these are realy not impressive enough comparing to the e71. But this is just my opinion.
I love my e71 and I'm not going to buy the e72.
Just waiting for Nokia to build something I can't resist.

Funny how you'd think Nokia would want to add more commonly used symbols (like _, %, ", $) on the E72 QWERTY keypad, but has only added the parentheses symbols. Maybe they forgot. LOL.

I sometimes find it weird that an iPod Touch has way more apps than the Symbian. :/

BTW, is Nokia Messaging service free in the E72?

i have used optical navigation on my samsung i780 and i have to say, its not a good way of moving your mouse nor even a better replacement than your tactile 5 way navigation keys..

The E71 is a gorgeous-looking handset. The E72 is nowhere near it in terms of looks, and that's a big turn-off for me. It may be an upgrade, but it's got nothing major that would tempt me to switch over from my E71. Additionally, Nokia's decision to use the optical navipad is deplorable. It's the most inconvenient way to navigate through a menu and, judging by the video, it's implementation is very poor. I'm passing on this phone. My next upgrade is, now, definitely going to be Android.

Being an E71 owner who is content with the phone except for the inferior camera, I am not impressed with the E72, even if it comes with a good 5MP camera. And that opti-scroll thingy looks like it could be an EPIC FAIL.

Wow, It sounds like a majority of people are not remotely excited about the E72. I guess it makes sense since it a small upgrade compared to the E71.

Right we need an upgrade but wrong they've upgraded the wrong part. And the price is not attractive. With a bit more we can get a fully-touch-screen HTC. So what's the point?

I own an e71 for 1,5 years now and use almost every damn function on daily basis, so for me it doesn't make much sense to switch to e72. nevertheless i advise people i know to get one, if they are planning o buy a smartphone. i think, i will just wait for e73, which will surely be good enough to make me switch.

@Timi Cantisiano: I agree sooo with you!!!! actually I got a N97 which is now at Nokia cause it crashed after hardreset on v20 (couldn't get contacts back on it and so on..) but last year I had a E71 and it's so amazing what power it brings isn't it?? so I will buy the E72 I think, cause I'm very annoyed from my N97..or maybe I wait til N900...
